Sixty-five local vendors will fill The Goodman at Village Towers on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Steel Magnolia Moms' seventh annual Holiday Market, a shopping event built to raise money for Houston mothers raising children with special needs. Admission is $15, with tickets available online or at the door, and more than half of the participating vendors have pledged to hand over 10% of their sales directly to the nonprofit.

Steel Magnolia Moms describes itself as a Houston-based nonprofit created to support and connect mothers of children with special needs, according to khou.com. The group offers programs that promote mental health, wellness and community, and funds raised at the market go toward mental health services for moms along with camp scholarships for their kids, as reported by houstonchronicle.com. As for how many mothers the organization actually serves, the figures diverge: CW39 Houston reported the group has more than 3,500 members, while the Houston Chronicle described a community of over 2,000 mothers of children with special needs.

The market itself has grown steadily. The Houston Chronicle's coverage of the fifth annual event put the vendor count at more than 50, and khou.com reported the sixth annual market was held Nov. 6 at the same Village Towers venue. This year's lineup of 65 vendors, according to CW39 Houston, marks the largest iteration yet.

Small Businesses Take Center Stage

Shoppers will find small businesses owned by Steel Magnolia Moms members alongside artisans with disabilities, the station's report notes. Beyond browsing, the day includes festive cocktails, a special-needs-friendly Santa and Mrs. Claus, and raffle baskets valued at more than $5,000, with raffle chances starting at $5.

One of the vendors joining the market is LadyBird & Grace, a women's clothing boutique on Memorial Drive offering clothing, accessories and jewelry, per ladybirdandgrace.com. Owner Kristi Miller, who brings more than 15 years of residential and commercial design experience to her shop, appeared on HTown Live with Maggie Flecknoe to showcase boutique finds and talk about the market.

A Mission Rooted in Personal Loss

Steel Magnolia Moms traces its roots to a 2016 gathering of 18 mothers in Houston that has since grown into a much larger community, according to steelmagnoliamoms.com. The nonprofit now provides counseling, support groups, wellness programs, inclusive summer camps and restorative retreats for mothers, and hosts two public fundraising events each year along with several private gatherings for members.

The organization was founded by Elizabeth Elder, whose own family history shaped its mission. Elder's daughter, Annabelle, died in 2021 at age 11, and a 2016 encounter at a nail salon inspired Elder's advocacy around disability awareness, eventually leading her to start Steel Magnolia Moms.
