About 350 people picked up hammers and swung in unison at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship Wednesday, hoping to set a new Guinness World Records title for most people hammering a nail simultaneously. They came up short of the mark they needed to beat.
The attempt was organized by the Maryland Building Industry Association as part of its annual Builder Mart trade show, according to Capital Gazette. The outlet reported that successful participants numbered about 350, a count that fell well short of what was needed to claim the record.
Builder Mart 2026 had been scheduled for Oct. 21 at the fairgrounds in West Friendship, according to the trade group's own event listing. The nail-hammering attempt was billed as a highlight of the show, which draws together homebuilders and industry professionals from across the state, as noted in event details published by Patch.
A Tall Order From the Start
The target the Maryland group needed to clear was steep. Guinness World Records lists the record for most people hammering a nail simultaneously at 470, a mark that has stood since it was set in 2019. With roughly 350 participants taking part Wednesday, the Howard County attempt landed well below that threshold.
That 470-person benchmark was achieved by the Tokyo Doken Nerima Branch in Nerima, Tokyo, on Sept. 29, 2019, according to Guinness World Records. The Japanese event marking the milestone was held as part of a celebration of the Nerima branch of the Tokyo General Construction Workers Union's 60th anniversary.
What Happens Next
The Maryland attempt still gave Builder Mart attendees a group activity and some bragging rights for turning out thirty dozen hammer-wielding participants on a weekday. Whether the association makes another run at the title in a future year remains to be seen, but for now, the record set in Tokyo seven years ago stands unbeaten.
