Albany police searching a home at 7 Marlborough Court found what appeared to be human remains inside a shed on the property Tuesday, in a case tied directly to the unsolved 2010 disappearance of Ashley Carroll. Carroll was 24 and living in Troy when she vanished in May 2010 after telling friends she was headed to meet a boyfriend near First Street in Albany, and she was never seen again.
The remains had not been identified as of Tuesday, according to timesunion.com, which reported that an initial analysis revealed signs of foul play according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. Albany County District Attorney Lee Kindlon said an autopsy and DNA analysis would be used to confirm whose remains were found. He also said investigators expected to find something and that he could not speculate about why the property search in 2010 found nothing.
Police used ground-penetrating radar and police dogs during the search, which was conducted under a warrant, per the same account. Notably, the Marlborough Court property had already been searched once before, shortly after Carroll disappeared in 2010, but investigators found nothing at that time.
A Case Investigators Never Closed
Carroll was last seen on May 6, 2010, near Quail Street and First Street in Albany, according to wnyt.com, which quoted investigators saying certain recent investigative leads have brought us to this neighborhood. Authorities do not believe Carroll ever made it back to her Troy apartment, since all of her clothing and jewelry were left behind there, charleyproject.org reports.
Her cellphone was never used again after she disappeared; it was last tracked to a location near a friend's home on Marlborough Court in Albany, the same source notes. The Marlborough Court property was searched shortly after Carroll disappeared in 2010 and again in 2026.
Daily Voice reported that no one has ever been charged in connection with Carroll's disappearance, and that remained the case as of Tuesday.
Possible Links To A Separate Albany Murder
Investigators have also looked into whether Carroll's case connects to other unsolved Albany-area disappearances from the same period. The investigation involved potential links to the 2010 disappearance of Donald Green, according to cbs6albany.com.
Authorities separately investigated potential links between Carroll's disappearance and the June 13, 2010, murder of 41-year-old Steven Jackson of Guilderland, though those possible links were not disclosed during the murder trial of the men charged in Jackson's death, per the Times Union's reporting. Anthony Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping in that case and agreed to cooperate with investigators searching for Jackson's body, according to a separate timesunion.com report; Davis testified against the other defendants, whose first trial ended in a mistrial and whose second trial ended in acquittals on all charges, charleyproject.org notes.
For now, the central question in Carroll's case remains the one that has hung over her family for more than fifteen years: whose remains were found in that Albany shed. Investigators have said an autopsy and DNA analysis would be used to confirm whose remains were found.
