A husband and wife were flown to an area trauma center Wednesday afternoon after a serious multi-vehicle crash near the intersection of Fairhaven Road and Solomons Island Road, also known as Route 2, trapped occupants inside their vehicles and closed Route 2 for an extended period. Emergency crews were called to the scene in southern Anne Arundel County at approximately 2:08 p.m., and a possible third victim was also reported, though that person's involvement and condition had not been confirmed.
According to The BayNet, multiple vehicles were involved in the collision, with initial reports indicating occupants were trapped inside. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded for a rescue operation, and the scale of the response was significant enough that Anne Arundel County crews requested mutual aid from neighboring Calvert County, with Calvert County Rescue Squad 1 called in to assist.
Two victims were evaluated for injuries serious enough to potentially require transport to a trauma center, and emergency personnel requested a medical helicopter to get them there quickly. Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 ultimately transported the husband and wife to the trauma center for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately available as of the report.
Route 2 Closed for Hours During Investigation
Motorists were advised to avoid the crash area as authorities worked the scene, and Route 2 remained closed for an extended period near Fairhaven Road and Jewell Road while an accident reconstruction investigation got underway. The circumstances that led to the collision remained under investigation, and the outlet's report indicated additional information would be released as it became available.
A Stretch of Road With a Troubled History
Wednesday's crash adds to a string of serious collisions along the Solomons Island Road corridor in recent memory. Back in April, a crash on Solomons Island Road left one woman dead and two others injured after a 19-year-old driving a Dodge Challenger struck a Nissan Xterra, pushing it into the opposite lane where it collided head-on with a Toyota, according to DC News Now.
Separately, a three-vehicle crash near Birdsville Road in Davidsonville killed a dump truck driver after the truck traveled up an embankment, rolled onto its side, and caught fire, trapping the driver inside, WBAL-TV reported. In that crash, the pickup truck driver was flown to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center with serious injuries, while the SUV driver escaped unharmed. Another four-vehicle crash on Old Solomons Island Road in Annapolis injured six people, with one taken to a trauma center with serious, non-life-threatening injuries while others were treated at a local hospital or refused treatment, per WMAR-2 News; that incident similarly forced a temporary closure of the roadway between Forest Drive and Somerville Road.
Anne Arundel County maintains a public Vision Zero dashboard tracking vehicle crash data on county-maintained roads from 2020 through 2024, offering residents a window into crash patterns across the county. As of the latest report, investigators had not released further details on what caused Wednesday's crash, and authorities said additional information would be provided as it becomes available.
