For three years, police in Prince George's County had no suspect and no motive in the stabbing death of a 33-year-old Hyattsville man with no fixed address. That changed when detectives arrested 67-year-old Kevin Warbington in Washington, D.C., and charged him with first- and second-degree murder in the 2023 killing of Avrell Milam.
Milam was found dead near the Hyattsville Crossing Metro station, according to the seed facts reported by Daily Voice. Officers with the Hyattsville Police Department had responded at approximately 2:55 a.m. on Aug. 30, 2023, to the 2900 block of Belcrest Center Drive for a report of an unresponsive person, according to a statement from PGPD News. Police said officers located the victim outside suffering from trauma, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit was notified and assumed the investigation, per the same statement. At the time, detectives said they were working to identify a suspect or suspects and determine a motive — a case description noting the victim was 33-year-old Avrell Milam of no fixed address.
A Suspect Finally Emerges
The case sat without a named suspect for three years until Prince George's County homicide detectives developed Warbington as a suspect and secured an arrest warrant against him. As reported by WJLA, detectives identified Warbington as the suspect through what police described only as “various investigative techniques,” without disclosing further detail on what led them to him.
The outlet's report states that a warrant was obtained earlier this month and that Warbington was arrested in Washington, D.C. He is now charged with first- and second-degree murder along with related offenses, and he remains in D.C. pending extradition to Prince George's County, per the same account.
No Known Connection Between the Two Men
Despite the arrest, investigators say they still don't know why Milam was killed. Police told the station that there is no known connection between Warbington and Milam, and that the motive is still being investigated — leaving the central question of the case unresolved even after three years.
The Prince George's County Police Department Fugitive Unit took Warbington into custody in Washington, D.C., working alongside the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, according to the seed facts from Daily Voice's reporting. Investigators have not identified any prior link between the two men, and the case remains open as detectives continue trying to determine what led to Milam's death.
