Tampa is hosting its first-ever HYROX competition this week, and the fitness race's debut is bringing a crowd unlike anything the Tampa Convention Center has seen in recent memory. The four-day event runs October 22 through October 25, 2026, filling downtown with athletes hauling gear bags and spectators lining up before dawn.
Organizers expect roughly 18,700 athletes and more than 18,000 spectators to pass through the venue over the course of the competition, according to FOX 13 News. The station reports that competition began Thursday morning and continues through Sunday, with several divisions racing each day. As the Tampa Bay Times notes, the event has already drawn thousands of athletes and spectators to the city for its first HYROX competition.
What HYROX Actually Is
For the uninitiated, HYROX combines running with functional fitness exercises in a standardized race format, per FOX 13's reporting. Tampa's edition includes men's and women's races, doubles, pro and adaptive divisions, and relay races designed for different experience levels. The event takes place at the Tampa Convention Center, located at 333 S. Franklin St., according to HYROX.
Athletes heading to compete need to bring identification to check in, the station's report notes, and on-site registration opens 90 minutes before the first start time of each day, per the HYROX event page. More than 98% of HYROX athletes finish their race, and no qualification is required to enter — a detail that helps explain why the Tampa field has swelled toward nearly 19,000 competitors.
Getting In: One Entrance, No Shortcuts
Anyone heading downtown this weekend should know the venue has tightened its access points considerably. All attendees must use the Riverwalk Entrance at 333 S. Franklin St., and attendees will not be able to enter the venue from the parking garage, according to the HYROX event page. The overhead pedestrian walkway connecting the Tampa Convention Center to the Embassy Suites also will not be available for venue access, so guests staying at that hotel can't simply walk over.
Security will be tight as well. All attendees will be subject to metal detection and bag search before entering, per the same event page. Parking is available on the facility's ground level, but it's first-come, first-served, with no reserved spots guaranteed for athletes or spectators.
A Sport Growing Faster Than Almost Any Other
Tampa's debut arrives as HYROX experiences explosive global growth. The competition launched in Germany in 2017 and quickly expanded to races in more than 11 countries and over 30 cities, according to HYROX's own history page. It was created by Christian Toetzke, along with three-time Olympic medalist and world champion Moritz Furste and marketing expert Michael Trautmann.
The numbers behind that expansion are striking. Athlete participation grew from 570,000 competitors during the 2024/25 season to 1.5 million in 2025/26, according to SportsPro, while the number of races worldwide jumped from 74 to 105 over the same period. The outlet reports HYROX is projected to draw more than 2.5 million athletes globally in 2026, with some individual events already seeing over 50,000 athletes and 35,000 spectators.
That growth has also reshaped the sport's infrastructure. HYROX's distribution network now comprises 15,000 gyms worldwide, and its affiliate program is growing by five to six percent each month, on track to reach 24,000 gyms by the end of the year, per SportsPro's reporting. For Tampa, that global momentum translates into a packed downtown through Sunday night, with the Tampa Convention Center serving as the latest stop on a race circuit that shows no signs of slowing down.
