Football fans tuning into Super Bowl LXI from SoFi Stadium will have an out-of-this-world viewing option this February: a live, fully animated Star Wars version of the game, rendered in real time as the actual matchup unfolds in Inglewood. The NFL announced the alternate telecast, called Star Wars Funday Football, on October 19 alongside ESPN, Lucasfilm and Disney, confirming that the galaxy-themed broadcast will air live and simultaneously with the main game on February 14, 2027.

The animated version will stream on Disney+ and the ESPN app while also airing on Disney Channel and Disney XD, according to the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, the traditional telecast will run on ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman calling the action and Lisa Salters and Laura Rutledge reporting from the sidelines, per the same report. Anthony Daniels, who has voiced C-3PO since the original Star Wars trilogy, will reprise the droid for the alternate telecast, appearing alongside R2-D2, according to a teaser video cited by the Times.

How the Animation Comes Together in Real Time

The technical lift behind turning live football into a galaxy-far-far-away cartoon is substantial. The broadcast relies on Sony's Beyond Sports data visualization technology, which rebuilds live action into animation in real time by combining player tracking data from NFL Next Gen Stats with Sony's Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking, according to CNET. Tracking devices worn by players feed data into a real-time animation system that reconstructs every pass, block and tackle as the play happens, the outlet reports.

That system will generate live-animated avatars of all the players on the field, with Star Wars characters substituting in during special moments and easter eggs woven throughout the game, according to the Times. It's a continuation of a format ESPN and Disney have been refining for a few years now — previous Funday Football installments have been themed to Toy Story, The Simpsons and Monsters, Inc., per the same report.

A Franchise Disney Has Been Building Since 2023

Star Wars Funday Football marks the fourth animated NFL alternate broadcast from ESPN, Disney and the NFL, following Toy Story Funday Football in October 2023, The Simpsons Funday Football in December 2024 and Monsters Funday Football in December 2025. As IGN notes, Disney initially experimented with live animated sports in March 2023 with the NHL's Big City Greens Classic, laying the groundwork for the football spinoffs that followed.

The original Toy Story broadcast, produced by ESPN and Beyond Sports during a regular-season Falcons-Jaguars matchup, didn't just draw eyeballs — it drew hardware. ESPN Press Room reports the telecast won three Sports Emmy Awards in May 2024, taking home honors for Outstanding Studio or Production Design/Art Direction, Outstanding Graphic Design – Event/Show and the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award. That same Toy Story altcast also set an audience milestone as the most-watched live event to date on Disney+ based on peak concurrency, with its companion conventional stream setting a record on ESPN+, according to SportsPro.

SoFi Stadium's Second Turn Hosting the Big Game

Super Bowl LXI will be played at SoFi Stadium on February 14, 2027, according to TheWrap. ESPN network executives believe total viewership could reach 130 million, per TheWrap.

ABC will carry Super Bowl LXI, according to Front Office Sports.

A MegaCast Built Around the Animated Feed

Star Wars Funday Football won't be the only alternate way to watch. ESPN plans a multi-feed MegaCast presentation for Super Bowl LXI that includes a Peyton and Eli Manning ManningCast on ESPN2 and Pat McAfee's Field Pass on ESPNU, according to Awful Announcing.

Disney and ESPN also plan to make the Star Wars altcast available live and on-demand across more than 155 international markets, including expanded live distribution in Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Sub-Saharan Africa, according to an ESPN Press Room announcement. The game will additionally be available on demand on Disney+ in major European and Asian markets shortly after airing, per the same release.

Part of a Bigger Star Wars Anniversary Year

The football crossover lands squarely inside Lucasfilm's broader 50th-anniversary push for Star Wars in 2027, according to IGN.

On the halftime front, no official performer has been announced for Super Bowl LXI, though Jay-Z has been rumored as a possible headliner, according to the Times. The anniversary momentum extends to theaters as well: A New Hope is set to return to theaters on February 19, 2027, and Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, is slated to hit theaters on May 28, 2027, per the same report.
