The cause of the fire that killed Carbondale resident Michael Wallace remains under investigation. Local authorities and the Lackawanna County Coroner’s Office were still at the scene, according to WNEP.
Wallace, 55, died in the fire at his Canaan Street home. Chief Deputy Coroner Jesse Vandeusen confirmed his death, and fire crews were called to the house before 6 a.m. Sunday, WNEP reported.
Five people lived in the home, according to Vandeusen. WNEP reported that Wallace’s wife told authorities the household woke to smoke. A neighbor placed a ladder by a second-story window; his wife used it to escape, and the couple’s children also got out. Wallace had left the house but went back inside, and authorities later found his body there, the outlet reported.
In a separate August fire in Shavertown, one man died and two people were hospitalized. Fox56 reported that the incident was the area’s third fatal residential fire in four days: Fox56’s report.
