Free outdoor Wi-Fi is now up and running at the Isle of Palms Recreation Center, giving residents and visitors a no-password way to get online right at the shelter and playground. The city announced the new connectivity Friday, framing it as a small but meaningful upgrade to one of the island's most-used public spaces.
According to WCBD News 2, the City of Isle of Palms says the free, fast public Wi-Fi is available now at the recreation center, located at 24 28th Ave. The city said visitors can connect online for free at what it called a community gathering space, with service covering the shelter and playground areas.
No Password, Just Log On
Getting connected does not require a password, per the city, so anyone stopping by the shelter or playground can hop online without hunting down a code from staff. The station's report notes the city specifically invited students and community members to bring a laptop or tablet to the recreation center for studying, reading or working on school projects.
That framing suggests the city is positioning the recreation center as more than just a spot for ballfields and playground equipment — it is meant to double as an informal study or work space for families on the island.
Tied to a Resident-Driven Planning Effort
City officials described the Wi-Fi rollout as a recommendation identified through the city's Community Enrichment Plan, and said they were excited to realize another community-driven recommendation, per the same account. The city has said the plan reflects resident feedback about the kinds of amenities and services people want to see on the island.
Details on that broader planning process remain limited. The City of Isle of Palms describes the Community Enrichment Plan, known as IOPThrives, as an effort built using residents' voices as the main driver, developed in collaboration with Explore Charleston, the College of Charleston and The McNair Group, with improving residents' quality of life listed as one of the priorities anchoring the city's broader strategic plan.
The city's running list of recommendations tied to that planning process touches on other quality-of-life issues around the recreation center as well. One recommendation dated March 14, 2025, called for increased off-season speed-limit enforcement along Palm Boulevard between 21st and 41st streets, and for the city to consider adding more crosswalks and sidewalks, with particular emphasis on the streets surrounding the recreation center, according to the City of Isle of Palms.
For now, the Wi-Fi launch stands as the latest tangible result of that resident-feedback process to reach the recreation center grounds. Anyone looking to take advantage of the free connection can head to the shelter or playground area at 24 28th Ave. and log on without needing a password.
