A 32-year-old woman was shot and killed by Jacksonville sheriff's officers Sunday morning near Mar Vic Lane and Biscayne Boulevard after officials said she pulled a gun from a bag and fired at them. No officers were hurt in the exchange, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to actionnewsjax.com, officers were called at 10:16 a.m. to Mar Vic Lane and Dunn Avenue after a caller reported a Black woman pointing a gun at a white man. Four officers arrived at 10:22 a.m. and determined she was the same woman deputies had been unable to find a day earlier, the outlet reported.
A Day of Earlier Calls That Went Unresolved
The woman was linked to two calls from the previous day, Saturday, each describing a Black woman dressed in purple with a gun, per the same report from actionnewsjax.com. At 9:15 a.m. Saturday, a 911 caller reported the woman waving a gun in the 10600 block of Monaco Drive, and at 10:12 a.m. a separate caller said a woman wearing purple pointed a gun at them and their dog in the 10600 block of Briar Cliff Road East — but officers could not locate her either time, the outlet noted.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office shared some of this timeline in a post on X from its official account, @jsopio, stating that around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 10th, JSO received a call about a Black woman who was reportedly brandishing a gun. Sheriff T.K. Waters and Undersheriff Mark Romano shared additional details about the shooting following the Sunday incident.
Officers Follow Woman for a Quarter-Mile Before Gunfire Near Biscayne Avenue
Once officers caught up with her Sunday, the woman was yelling and carrying bags that she repeatedly reached into, despite being told at least four times to show her hands, according to news4jax.com. At 10:34 a.m., at the intersection of Mar Vic and Biscayne avenues, she pulled a gun from a bag and fired once, striking the driver's-side door of a patrol vehicle, per the actionnewsjax.com account.
Three officers returned fire multiple times, striking her, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, the outlet reported. Authorities have not released her name because her next of kin had not yet been notified.
Independent Investigation Underway
The homicide cold case unit and the crime scene unit are investigating, and the State Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation, actionnewsjax.com reported. JSO's handling of officer-involved shootings has drawn scrutiny before: in a separate deadly shooting in August, the State Attorney's Office opened an investigation with a JSO use-of-force review expected to follow, according to news4jax.com's earlier coverage. In another case from May, JSO released a critical incident briefing and video detailing an officer-involved shooting on Eberly Drive, per the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
It remains to be seen what comes of the latest review into Sunday's shooting, which unfolded across two days of 911 calls before ending in gunfire on Jacksonville's Northside.
