Jersey City officials are deep into substantive conversations about building the city's first recreation center in the modern era, with the planned facility taking shape at Bayside Park off Garfield Avenue. The project has moved from concept to active design work, even as funding remains an issue.
The push traces back to a City Council vote at its November 14, 2024, meeting, when members approved a $467,000 contract to design two recreation centers, according to Jersey Digs. That resolution passed 8-1, with Councilman Rich Boggiano casting the lone vote against it. The initial phase covers a new facility at Bayside Park alongside a modernization of the former Joseph Connors Senior Center in Jersey City Heights, with FC3 Architecture + Design awarded the contract to draw up plans for both sites.
Mark Robison, project manager at Dresdner Robin, discussed the planned Bayside Park recreation center during a session last Wednesday at the Bethune Center, according to Jersey City Times. The Jersey City Times report, authored by staff reporter Andy Milone, frames the project as moving forward even as financing details remain unsettled.
A Citywide Push Across All Six Wards
The Bayside project is the leading edge of a larger initiative to establish permanent recreation centers in all six of Jersey City's wards, per Jersey City Times' earlier coverage. That same reporting describes the $467,000 design contract going to FC3 Architects to produce initial plans for the new community facilities. The city had also scheduled a series of eight public workshops to begin in January 2025 to collect resident feedback on the broader plan, the outlet noted.
Jersey City landed $1 million in federal funding to build the Bayside Community Center in January, according to nj.com. That report describes the Bayside facility as the first of six planned recreation centers citywide, and places it within Bayside Park in the city's Greenville section. State Senator Angela McKnight secured the American Rescue Plan grant behind that funding, per the same nj.com account, which also noted that additional public meetings were scheduled for this year to gather resident feedback before construction begins.
Ward Details Around the Project
A November 2024 nj.com report quoted the mayor describing a new building in Bayside Park as Ward B's recreation center. Separately, Jersey City Times reported that Ward A Councilwoman Denise Ridley is leading the effort.
Funding Remains an Issue
Funding remains an issue as the project moves through design work.
For now, the Bayside Park plan remains in the design and public-input phase, with Robison's recent briefing at the Bethune Center signaling that the project is still actively moving, even if the dollars-and-cents picture isn't finished.
