The BMW Championship has opened volunteer registration for its 2027 debut at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, with organizers saying more than 2,000 volunteers will be needed to pull off championship week. The tournament runs Aug. 17-22, 2027, and marks the event's first-ever visit to New Jersey and the greater New York metropolitan area.
According to ROI-NJ, applicants can register through the event website, and the Western Golf Association, which serves as the tournament's host organization, has reported that volunteer positions are limited. Per the BMW Championship's own volunteer page, roles will range from welcoming patrons and assisting corporate hospitality guests to interacting with players and caddies, distributing real-time scoring and statistical data, and operating the merchandise tent.
Who Can Sign Up, and What It Costs
Volunteers generally must be at least 18 years old and able to commit to a minimum of three shifts during tournament week, with each shift running four to six hours depending on the assignment, the tournament's volunteer page states. There's an exception carved out for younger fans, too: minors who are at least 16 are eligible for the merchandise-tent and standard-bearer committees.
Signing up isn't free. Volunteers are asked to purchase a $195 uniform package that the tournament values at $750, which includes two golf shirts, an outerwear piece, a hat or visor, a clear championship bag, a credential valid for entry all week, parking during scheduled shifts, an exclusive ticket discount, and food and beverages during shifts.
A Regional Golf Showcase Unlike Any Before It
Vince Pellegrino, the WGA's senior vice president of tournaments, described volunteering as an opportunity for regional golf fans to experience the championship and the venue from a new perspective, the station's report notes. Liberty National has hosted marquee golf before — The Presidents Cup in 2017 and THE NORTHERN TRUST in 2009, 2013, 2019 and 2021 — but never the BMW Championship itself, a distinction confirmed by the same account.
The move follows the 2026 edition of the tournament, which was held at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. Descriptions of the championship field vary by source: the tournament's own announcement for the St. Louis event stated the field would include the top 50 players in the FedExCup standings, while the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation has described the event as the penultimate FedExCup Playoffs stop featuring the season's top 70 players — language that matches the PGA TOUR's framing of the broader 2027 Playoffs, which will begin with the top 70 players looking to advance to the TOUR Championship. Whichever field size applies, the top FedExCup players will compete for the J.K. Wadley Trophy and a place in the TOUR Championship.
Scholarships, and a New Jersey Connection on Campus
All net proceeds from the tournament benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation, which provides full tuition and housing scholarships to youth caddies with financial need and strong academic and leadership records. Fundraising totals attributed to the event differ by source: the tournament has raised more than $63 million for the foundation since 2007, while the PGA TOUR has put the figure at more than $45 million over the same period.
The tournament's New Jersey ties run deeper than the 2027 host site. Evans Scholars attend Rutgers University, and Jameson Hall D on campus is undergoing renovations to become a permanent scholarship house for the Rutgers chapter, a project made possible by a gift from the family of Dan and Paul Fireman, according to the Rutgers University Foundation. The Fireman family also founded Liberty National Golf Club, and the Evans Scholars Foundation plans to dedicate the renovated scholarship house during BMW Championship week in 2027.
The foundation's reach has grown in recent years. This fall, 1,310 Evans Scholars are attending 28 universities nationwide, according to the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation. For now, Jersey City golf fans curious about joining the volunteer ranks for a first-of-its-kind tournament have one clear next step: head to the BMW Championship's volunteer page and get a registration in before the limited spots fill up.
