Rhode Island Comic Con is three weeks from opening its doors across downtown Providence, and organizers are still finalizing who will actually show up. John Cena is set to headline the Sunday, November 8 lineup with photos and autographs, even as several previously announced guests have dropped off the roster entirely.

The three-day convention runs November 6 through 8, 2026, spreading across the Amica Mutual Pavilion, the Rhode Island Convention Center, and the Omni Providence Hotel, according to WJAR. Those three venues are physically linked by indoor skybridges, a layout the Amica Mutual Pavilion describes as part of the Rhode Island Convention & Entertainment Complex. Cena's appearance is limited to Sunday only, with a fan package that includes a photo, an autograph, and RICC-branded items, though slots are limited, the station reports.

Christina Ricci and Mick Foley have also been announced as guests, along with four voice actors from the Sonic the Hedgehog gaming franchise, per the same report. But the cancellation list has grown too: R.L. Stine, George Takei, John Ratzenberger, Ariel Winter, and Dan Fogler have all pulled out of their scheduled appearances. Organizers are posting schedule changes and guest cancellations as they happen, and attendees can track late additions on the event's Facebook page.

A Convention Built From a Crowded, Chaotic Past

This year's careful venue planning traces back more than a decade. Rhode Island Comic Con launched in 2012 under Fall River-based producer Altered Reality Entertainment LLC with roughly 15,000 attendees, and has since grown into one of the largest pop-culture conventions in New England, drawing upwards of 90,000 people annually, according to Providence Business News. That growth hasn't always gone smoothly. During the 2014 convention, the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal temporarily shut down entry to the Rhode Island Convention Center after Saturday attendance blew past its 17,000-person occupancy limit, leaving an estimated 1,500 ticket holders stuck outside, per Wikipedia. That shutdown forced organizers and state officials to overhaul crowd logistics for future years.

State officials have since invested in the infrastructure that hosts the show. Rhode Island completed $19 million in capital renovations at the Amica Mutual Pavilion and Convention Center in September 2023, upgrading seating, roofing, and digital control rooms using state capital funds and federal COVID-19 recovery money, Providence Business News reported. The payoff extends beyond the convention floor: a 2018 economic impact study found Rhode Island Comic Con generates $4.2 million in direct local economic impact for the Providence area, according to Wikipedia, while Providence Business News reported a separate projection of about $3 million in direct local spending; state data shows every dollar spent operating the Convention Center produces $9.30 in broader local economic activity, per the outlet's reporting.

Smart Glasses Banned Amid a Wider Privacy Crackdown

For the first time, organizers have banned Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and other wearable recording devices from the show, WJAR reports. Attendees caught wearing the camera-equipped eyewear risk removal from the event and the loss of their passes or credentials. The move puts Rhode Island Comic Con alongside UK Comic-Con events, European and U.S. theaters, courtrooms, and hospitality chains that have instituted similar bans in 2026 after privacy concerns over secret recordings, according to PCMag. Meta has responded to criticism by pointing to its recording indicator.

New Merchandise and a Beer Named After a TV Villain

Collectibles are getting an upgrade this year too. RICC has partnered with trading card manufacturer LEAF to release a set of 39 cards available only at the convention, some randomly inserted and autographed, distributed through VIP packages and venue sales, according to the show's own announcements. The Blockbuster Experience is also returning, offering a paid, curated selection of classic movies in an area styled after a Blockbuster Video store.

On the food and drink side, Providence-based Buttonwoods Brewery crafted VoughtPA, a 5.5% ABV pale ale, as the convention's official beer for 2026, replacing past brewery partnerships. The name nods to the sinister corporation at the center of Amazon Prime's The Boys. Cardi's Furniture & Mattresses provided prizes for the 2022 convention's Sunday cosplay contest.

Organizers plan to release the full panel schedule ahead of the show, and tickets remain available at the AMP box office, through Ticketmaster, and at Toy Vault locations. Altered Reality Entertainment, the Fall River-based producer behind Rhode Island Comic Con, also runs a wider slate of fan events including Terror Con, Colorado Springs Comic Con, Rhode Island Anime Con, and the Contropolis conventions.
