A 30-year-old Jonesboro, Arkansas, woman is facing a felony charge after police say she stabbed another woman in the chest during a fight on Belt Street last weekend, leaving the victim in need of emergency surgery. Sydnee Danielle Mathis was arrested the following day and is now being held on a $100,000 bond ahead of a December court date.
Jonesboro police were called to the 500 block of Belt Street on Oct. 25 regarding a stabbing, according to KAIT. When officers arrived, they found a female victim suffering from a stab wound to her chest. Per the same report, witnesses told officers the victim and another woman were fighting when Mathis pulled out a knife and stabbed her.
Victim Underwent Emergency Surgery
The injured woman underwent emergency surgical treatment following the attack, the station's report states. Police arrested Mathis the following day, on Oct. 26, and transported her to the Craighead County Detention Center, where the jail's inmate roster logged her booking.
Mathis appeared before District Judge David Boling two days after her arrest. The judge found probable cause to charge her with first-degree battery, a Class B felony, and ordered that she be held on a $100,000 bond, per the same account.
Strict Bond Conditions If Released
Should Mathis make bond, she will be required to have no contact with the alleged victim and to wear a GPS ankle monitor, according to the report. Those conditions were set alongside the probable cause finding. She is awaiting a Dec. 16 arraignment in circuit court, and the allegations against her are not a finding of guilt.
Arkansas classifies first-degree battery as a Class B felony in most circumstances, with certain exceptions elevated to a Class Y felony, according to a 2019 Arkansas Sentencing Commission assessment. That same assessment lists a standard punishment range of five to 20 years in prison along with a fine of up to $15,000 for a Class B felony conviction.
The case was reported by Jonesboro Right Now on Oct. 29, after KAIT published its report on Oct. 28. Jonesboro Right Now noted Mathis's arrest followed the weekend altercation on Belt Street. No further details about the victim's identity or current condition have been released.
