A juvenile riding a bicycle was struck by a motor vehicle Sunday near North Dixie Drive and Keenan Avenue in Harrison Township, sending the young rider to Dayton Children's Hospital before further evaluation determined the injuries were minor rather than the serious ones initially feared.
Deputies from the Harrison Township Substation responded to the area after a report that a motor vehicle had struck a juvenile bicyclist, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Responding deputies found one juvenile male lying in the roadway on North Dixie Drive, as reported by dayton247now.com.
The juvenile was transported to Dayton Children's Hospital and was initially believed to have possible serious injuries, the outlet's report states. After further evaluation, though, medical staff determined the juvenile had only sustained minor injuries from the crash.
Driver Stayed Put, No Sign of Alcohol
The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene following the collision, per the same account. Investigators said alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the incident, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Unit is handling the ongoing investigation into exactly how the crash unfolded.
Details beyond those basics remain limited. The juvenile's age and the circumstances leading up to the collision have not been released, and it is not yet known whether the driver will face any citations.
A Separate Dayton Crash on a Different Date
The North Dixie Drive incident was not the only report of a juvenile cyclist struck in the Dayton area recently. In a separate case, the Dayton Police Department investigated after a juvenile bicyclist was hit by a car in the 2900 block of Marsha Lane, according to WDTN. That crash reportedly happened around 3:20 p.m., and the road was closed for investigation, with the juvenile reportedly in stable condition afterward.
The two incidents are separate cases in different jurisdictions and happened on different dates, but together they underscore how often young cyclists are ending up in the path of vehicles on local roads this fall. No additional information connecting the two crashes has been released by either agency.
For now, the Harrison Township crash remains under review by the Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Unit, and no further updates on the juvenile's recovery or the driver's status have been made public.
