A 63-year-old man was rushed to a nearby emergency room in serious condition early Thursday after an apparent stabbing in Honolulu's Kapahulu neighborhood, and police have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with the attack. The suspect remains in custody pending investigation on a charge of assault in the first degree.
According to KITV 4 Island News, police say the incident was reported at 1:45 a.m. Thursday in the Kapahulu area, and that the 52-year-old suspect allegedly used an edged weapon against the older man. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and treated the 63-year-old for apparent stab wounds before transporting him to the hospital in serious condition.
Police located the 52-year-old suspect after he allegedly assaulted the 63-year-old man, the station reports, and he was taken into custody and arrested on the first-degree assault charge. As of the report, he remained in custody while detectives continue their investigation. The outlet's account does not identify either man by name, nor does it detail the exact location within Kapahulu, the nature of the victim's injuries, or whether investigators recovered a weapon.
What Hawaii Law Says About First-Degree Assault
Under Hawaii law, a first-degree assault conviction can rest on evidence that a defendant was at least aware that the conduct in question was practically certain to cause serious bodily injury, according to the Hawaii State Legislature. That statutory language is general guidance on how the charge can be proven and does not speak to the facts or outcome of this particular Kapahulu case.
Not the First Stabbing Reported in the Area
Kapahulu has seen other high-profile stabbing cases in recent years, though the current incident has not been linked to them. In October 2019, a 45-year-old man was listed in critical condition after being stabbed near the Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library, with police saying a 58-year-old man attacked him with a knife around 4 p.m., as reported by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. In that case, EMS treated the victim for a stab wound to the lower extremity at the rear of the library on Kapahulu Avenue before taking him to the hospital.
Separately, KITV previously reported on an attempted murder investigation near Kapiolani Park on Kapahulu Avenue, in which a 21-year-old victim was allegedly tackled to the ground and stabbed multiple times by four unidentified men who had demanded his property. No arrests had been made in that case at the time it was reported, and the investigation was described as ongoing.
Broader Crime Figures Offer Mixed Signals
Statewide crime data released by the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General shows that Honolulu reported 30,758 offenses in 2025, yielding a crime rate of 3,116.3 per 100,000 residents; that rate was 16.6% lower than the 2024 total crime rate, according to the Governor of Hawaii's office. Separately, Honolulu Civil Beat has reported that violent crime on Oahu fell 24% between 2019 and 2024, citing the Honolulu Police Department's data dashboard. Neither figure establishes any trend specific to stabbings or assaults in Kapahulu, and the current case stands on its own pending further details from investigators.
