Kelly Clarkson closed out Providence College's season-opening pep rally Saturday night, capping a show that introduced the Friars' basketball and hockey teams to a packed Amica Mutual Pavilion. The 2026-27 Late Night Madness celebration doubled as both a concert and a launch party for the school's winter sports seasons, blending student performances with a headlining pop set.
A Season Kickoff Years in the Making
The celebration returned to the Amica Mutual Pavilion on Saturday, Oct. 3, according to friars.com, and formally opened the 2026-27 campaigns for Providence men's and women's basketball as well as men's ice hockey. Doors opened at 7 p.m., with student programs beginning at 8 p.m. and the concert following at 9 p.m., per a lineup announcement from media.providence.edu. As WJAR reported, the event kicked off the men's and women's basketball seasons alongside Clarkson's performance at the AMP.
Crowd estimates for the night varied depending on who was counting. Providence College's athletics department said more than 10,000 students, alumni and families gathered at the AMP, while college senior vice president for student affairs Steve Sears had separately described the event beforehand as drawing on the power of 12,000 Friar fans at a concert. Neither figure was reconciled in the available accounts.
Student Spirit Before the Headliner
Before Clarkson took the stage, the night kicked off with performances by the dance and cheer teams and other student groups, the station's report noted. The program was built around introducing the 2026-27 rosters, with anticipation already building around specific storylines for each squad. Providence men's hockey entered the season looking to repeat its Hockey East regular-season title, while the men's basketball team was hoping to bounce back into March Madness under new head coach Bryan Hodgson.
On the women's side, Providence basketball was picked to finish seventh in the Big East preseason poll, according to the Providence Journal. The team enters its fourth season under coach Erin Batth after closing last year 15-18 overall and 7-13 in conference play, per the same account.
Clarkson Grants an Unexpected Request
Clarkson proved to be a consummate pro at her October 3 appearance, delivering career-defining hits including “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” “My Life Would Suck Without You” and “Miss Independent,” according to American Songwriter. The night concluded with what friars.com called an entertaining performance by the national recording artist.
Midway through the show, a fan's request pulled Clarkson into holiday territory months ahead of schedule. The song the fan had requested was “Underneath The Tree,” and Clarkson obliged, American Songwriter reported, turning a college pep rally into an early detour through her Christmas catalog.
What's Next for the Friars
With the pep rally behind them, Providence's teams now turn toward exhibition play. The men's basketball team is scheduled to host Pittsburgh on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at the AMP, while the women's team is set to face Southern New Hampshire University on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall, both per friars.com.
Late Night Madness has built a reputation for headliners who draw as much buzz as the teams themselves. Previous editions have featured Carrie Underwood, Zac Brown Band, Khalid and Shaq, according to WPRI, placing Clarkson's appearance squarely within that tradition as Providence enters a winter sports season carrying plenty of its own expectations.
