A seven-piece band from Louisville, Kentucky, that calls its sound “Denim Psych” is bringing its genre-blurring live show to Tampa next Thursday, Nov. 5, with a stop at Magnanimus Brewing. Doom Gong travels as a septet and has spent the better part of two months crisscrossing the country on the road before rolling into Florida, according to Creative Loafing Tampa. Tickets for the show are already available, starting at $23.
Doom Gong formed in 2022 when seven music school students in Louisville decided to combine their disparate influences into one act, according to the band's own website. The result is a style they describe as a hodgepodge of psychedelic rock, jazz fusion, prog rock, bedroom pop, lo-fi and contemporary classical music — a mash-up they've branded Denim Psych. Creative Loafing Tampa describes the live product more simply as proggy-experimental psych-jazz, and the Louisville roots show up in nearly every bio the band has put out, with Doom Gong's Bandcamp page calling the group a “7-piece Denim Psych amalgam from Louisville, KY.”
The band has built a catalog that includes three rock opera-esque LPs — DOOM GONG, Dream Behemoth and MEGAGONG — plus one live album, according to the band's own account. That live record, Live at the Whirling Tiger, was captured on Nov. 18, 2023, during the band's Dream Behemoth album-release show at The Whirling Tiger in Louisville. Per Creative Loafing Tampa, the band released MEGAGONG last year, an album that folds in mellotron, synthesizers, horns, traditional keys, percussion and vocals.
A Jazz Drummer Opens the Bill
Supporting Doom Gong at Magnanimus Brewing will be Chaunces, the project led by drummer Chance Reynolds. The Friendly City Foundation says Reynolds first started making beats in junior high through his school's band program.
Doom Gong has shared stages with an eclectic run of touring acts, including Amyl and the Sniffers, The Black Angels and BADBADNOTGOOD, the band says on its website. A separate listing from OpenDate adds Allah Las and King Buffalo to that list of acts the band has performed alongside. The same booking page notes that Doom Gong had a European tour planned for summer 2026, and the band's own site uses the same wording about plans to tour the rest of the world soon after.
What's Next on the Road
Concert listing site JamBase shows four upcoming Doom Gong concerts as part of the band's 2026 schedule; separately, the Tampa stop is a November 2026 concert. For Tampa Bay fans of genre-bending live music, the Magnanimus Brewing show offers a rare chance to catch a touring act built entirely around refusing to pick a single lane, backed by a local opener in Reynolds who has spent years building his own jazz-rooted following in the Manatee area.
