A Kingston firefighter and an elderly resident were hospitalized after fire tore through a two-and-a-half-story home on Grove Street, with eight neighboring fire departments called in to help knock down the flames before they could claim the whole structure. The blaze broke out late Wednesday night, and the resident made it outside.

According to Boston 25 News, responding crews from the Kingston Fire and Police Departments saw smoke billowing from the eaves of the home as flames spread from the ceiling between the first and second floors up into the attic. The fire spread through the upper floors.

Both the resident and a firefighter suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals for treatment, the same report noted. Firefighters brought the three-alarm fire under control after about an hour, with mutual aid crews arriving from Pembroke, Duxbury, Carver, Plympton, Halifax, Hanson and Plymouth joining Kingston firefighters on scene.

How Eight Towns Converged on One Street

Kingston's profile on CapeCodFD.com lists the department's headquarters on Pembroke Street and Chief Mark R. Douglass. The multi-town response brought reinforcements from surrounding communities to help Kingston firefighters.

Kingston's department includes career personnel and 17 paramedics, according to its profile.

State Police Investigating, Not Treating Fire as Suspicious

Massachusetts State Police are investigating the fire, though the blaze is not believed to be suspicious, Boston 25 News reported. The Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit is attached to the State Fire Marshal's Office. The investigation is ongoing.

The Grove Street fire echoes a January incident in neighboring Plymouth, where firefighters battled a heavy second-floor fire and explosion at a 2.5-story home on Haven Road that also drew in the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, per the Plymouth Fire Department. In that case, Plymouth firefighters knocked down the second-floor fire within 20 minutes. Kingston has its own history with serious home fires: an accidental candle fire in February 2022 resulted in a civilian fatality in town, according to CBS Boston.
