A Kountze woman who stopped showing up for work earlier this month is still missing, and the man authorities describe as her boyfriend is now locked up on a $1 million bond, accused of her murder. Julia Renee Carter, 46, has not been found, and investigators say evidence points to domestic violence as the cause of her death.
Carter's employer contacted the Hardin County Sheriff's Office after she missed several days of work and asked deputies to check on her at a Kountze residence, according to KFDM. That welfare-check request on October 16 launched an investigation that has now stretched across much of East and Southeast Texas. The sheriff's office said the man identified as Carter's boyfriend is 42 years old, though the station spelled his name Daren Wayne Monk while 12News Now reported it as Darren Wayne Monk.
Hardin County Sheriff Mark Davis said evidence indicates Carter was the victim of domestic violence that resulted in her death, the station's report states. Investigators identified Monk as a suspect, and 356th District Judge Steve Thomas issued an arrest warrant charging him with murder.
A Phone Call, Then a Disappearance
Monk spoke with law enforcement by telephone on the afternoon of October 16, but rather than cooperate, he fled the area, per the same account. Investigators say he refused to assist with the probe into Carter's disappearance, and multiple agencies subsequently tracked his movements across several cities in East and South Texas as the search intensified.
That pursuit ended when Monk was captured near Katy. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service, the Gulf Coast Violent Crimes Task Force and the Southeast Texas Violent Crimes Task Force took him into custody without incident, and he was returned to the Hardin County Jail. Hardin County Justice of the Peace Charles Brewer arraigned Monk and set his bond at $1 million on the murder charge.
Search Continues Across Multiple Agencies
The investigation has drawn in a wide roster of law enforcement from around the state. Beyond the task forces involved in Monk's capture, the Jasper Police Department's Safe Streets Division, the Beaumont Police Department's Real-Time Crime Center and the Harris County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit have all assisted, the sheriff's office said. The FBI, Texas Rangers and Orange County Sheriff's Office have also taken part, according to the seed reporting from 12News Now.
Despite the manhunt and arrest, Carter's body has not been located. The sheriff's office said the investigation continues around the clock as agencies from across Texas work to find her.
A Pattern Seen Statewide
Carter's case adds to a grim statewide tally. In Texas, 160 people were killed by an intimate partner in 2025, and women accounted for 136 of those deaths, or 85 percent, according to data reported by KXAN. Among the women killed, 73.4 percent were fatally shot and 79.4 percent were killed by a current partner, the outlet found. More than half of those homicides, 55 percent, happened inside a home the victim shared with the killer, while another 12.5 percent occurred in the victim's own home — and only four of the victims statewide had a protective order against their killer.
