LA Fitness has opened a new 30,000-square-foot gym at 2170 E. Fowler Ave. in Tampa's University Area, bringing the company's upscale Elevate concept to Tampa. The club debuted on Oct. 27, and it represents roughly a $4.8 million investment in the Tampa market, complete with a Reformer Pilates studio, a HYROX functional training zone and an expanded free-weight section built around a Rogue Rig system.

The opening comes straight from the company itself, according to a release from PR Newswire, which describes the new club in the University Area and its amenities. WhatNow identifies it as an Elevate location. The space is designed to pack more variety into one roof than a typical LA Fitness location, with the free-weight area, branded LIFT, featuring Olympic benches and lifting platforms alongside the Rogue Rig.

Beyond the headline-grabbing Pilates and HYROX additions, the club also includes specialized lower-body training equipment, a full bank of cardio machines, personal training services and instructor-led group fitness classes, according to Tampa Bay Business & Wealth. That mix of amenities fits the broader pitch behind Elevate: LA Fitness is positioning it as a premium evolution of its traditional club format, blending modern training equipment, dedicated recovery zones, wellness amenities and higher-end interior design, per WhatNow.

Dale Mabry Club Slated for Elevate Conversion

LA Fitness isn't stopping at East Fowler. The California-based chain is converting its Dale Mabry location to the Elevate brand as well, the Tampa Bay Business Journal reports, with that club located at 301 S. Dale Mabry Highway. The East Fowler club is at the former University Mall site.

Specifics on the Dale Mabry project remain scarce. LA Fitness has not revealed the precise scope of that conversion or a timeline for completing it, so members in the area are left waiting for more details on what the upgrade will actually include and when work might begin.

Part of a Bigger Industry Push

The East Fowler debut lands amid a wave of investment from Fitness International, LA Fitness's parent company, which operates more than 600 locations across 25 U.S. states and Canada. The company has pointed to continued investments in club renovations, expanded amenities and enhanced member experiences as it modernizes its portfolio.

That strategy also reflects a competitive squeeze facing big-box gyms. The Tampa Bay Business Journal's reporting frames the push as a response to growing competition from boutique fitness brands. Elevate appears built to answer that trend directly, folding Pilates reformers and HYROX-style functional training into a traditional big-box footprint rather than ceding that market to standalone boutique studios.
