A 26-year-old man is behind bars in Laredo after police say he threw rocks at passing vehicles, then threw dirt and pebbles at an officer and a marked patrol unit. Jeremy Ramirez was taken into custody Friday, Oct. 23, near the intersection of Mann Road and Springfield Avenue following reports of the disturbance.
Officers were called out Thursday night, Oct. 22, after reports that a man was throwing rocks at passing cars near Mann Road and Springfield Avenue, according to KGNS. Police said Ramirez threw dirt and pebbles at an officer and a patrol car once they arrived on scene. With help from other officers, he was ultimately arrested, the station reported.
According to the Beaumont Enterprise, Ramirez threw a handful of dirt and pebbles at an officer and a marked patrol unit, and other officers assisted in taking him into custody. Mexican outlet El Mañana de Nuevo Laredo reported that Ramirez was arrested at the same crossing of Springfield Avenue and Mann Road.
Charge and Booking Details
News outlets have described the charge against Ramirez in slightly different terms. KGNS reported he now faces a charge of assault on a public servant, while El Mañana de Nuevo Laredo reported the charge as attacking a public servant. The Beaumont Enterprise, citing Webb County jail records, reported the charge as assault on a peace officer or judge, a second-degree felony.
Ramirez was booked into Webb County Jail Friday and remained in custody as of Friday morning, per the Beaumont Enterprise. The jail record listed no bond amount, the outlet reported. A mugshot was included with that report.
Not the First Rock-Throwing Case in Laredo
This is not the first time Laredo police have dealt with rocks being hurled at moving traffic. In April, a man was arrested after throwing large rocks onto a roadway on the Bob Bullock Loop, causing drivers to swerve to avoid them, according to the Laredo Morning Times, which described that case as resulting in a deadly conduct charge. It is unclear whether the two incidents are connected in any way.
No details about injuries to the officer, the patrol vehicle, or any other vehicles involved in Thursday's incident have been verified, and no court outcome has been reported.
