A 47-year-old Las Vegas, Nevada man died early Friday after his car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a semi-truck on a highway in rural Wilson County, Kansas. Clayton Sparks was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the truck driver walked away with no apparent injuries.
According to the WIBW, citing the Kansas Highway Patrol's crash log, the wreck happened at 4:05 a.m. Friday. Sparks was driving a Chrysler Concorde westbound on U.S. Highway 400 when he reportedly crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a 2026 Freightliner semi-tractor.
The semi was driven by 51-year-old Cassy Eno of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Per the crash log, both Sparks and Eno were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, but Sparks did not survive while Eno reportedly had no apparent injuries.
Wilson County sits in rural southeast Kansas, where U.S. 400 carries a steady mix of passenger vehicles and commercial trucking traffic. It is not the only fatal wreck reported on the county's roads in recent memory — a report from KSN detailed a February 2025 crash that killed a 35-year-old Altoona woman in the same county.
Statewide Fatality Count Still Climbing
Friday's crash adds to a year that has already seen significant traffic deaths across Kansas. As of a report published three calendar days earlier, the state had recorded 268 traffic-crash fatalities in 2026, a figure that was down 8.22% compared with the same point in 2025, according to KWCH, which cited data from the Kansas Department of Transportation. That outlet noted the numbers are preliminary and could change once ongoing investigations are completed.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining records on public-road crashes statewide that involve at least one motor vehicle and result in a fatality, an injury, or more than $1,000 in property damage, per the agency's own description of its crash-tracking duties.
