A 29-year-old Lebanon man and father of two died Saturday after his motorcycle collided head-on with a car while rounding a curve on Route 72 in Union Township. Jean C. Rodriguez Torres, a Guayama, Puerto Rico native and former Lebanon High School student, was flown by helicopter to a Hershey-area trauma center but could not be saved.
The crash happened around 2:17 p.m. on October 3 near the intersection of Route 72 and Moonshine Road, according to local21news.com, which reported that Rodriguez Torres was struck head-on by an oncoming car while traveling along a curve in the roadway. State police records show his 2016 Suzuki DR-Z400SM motorcycle collided with a southbound 2009 Volvo C30 sedan driven by 53-year-old Stuart C. Walmer of Annville, according to Pennsylvania Law Enforcement. Walmer was uninjured, and both vehicles sustained disabling damage, per the same records.
Emergency crews transported Rodriguez Torres via Penn State Health Life Lion helicopter to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to WPMT FOX43. No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash, per troopers.
Local Crews Responded to the Scene
Multiple local emergency agencies assisted at the crash site, including the Lickdale Fire Company, Pine Grove Fire Department, Northern Lebanon Fire and Emergency Services, and D.E. Richard Towing, which cleared both disabled vehicles from the roadway, according to LebTown. Troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police Jonestown station are investigating the crash under CAD Case Number PA 2026-1264813, per the same state police records.
Rodriguez Torres leaves behind two young children, according to biographical details compiled by Daily Voice. He had been traveling on Route 72 at the time of the collision, the outlet reported.
A Curve With a History of Fatal Crashes
The stretch of Route 72 where the crash occurred is locally designated as Suedberg Road in Union Township, near an intersection and curve that Lebanon County planning officials have targeted for corridor access and traffic studies, according to Lebanon County transportation planning records. Pennsylvania State Police Jonestown previously investigated a fatal vehicle crash along the same stretch of Route 72 in Union Township back in August 2022, per a Facebook post from the time.
Statewide, Pennsylvania recorded 2,927 total motorcycle crashes and 186 motorcycle fatalities in 2025, a 14.7% decline in fatal motorcycle crashes compared to 2024, according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Even as overall traffic deaths dropped to record lows, fatalities tied to aggressive driving choices — including careless passing, speeding, and driving too fast for conditions — rose 31% between 2020 and 2025, PennDOT has reported.
Under Pennsylvania Vehicle Code Section 3525, motorcycle operators aged 21 or older may legally ride without a helmet if they have held a motorcycle license for at least two years or completed an approved safety course, according to Conlon Tarker, P.C. It remains unclear whether state police toxicological or accident-reconstruction findings will establish what caused the motorcycle to enter the opposing lane near Moonshine Road, or whether local transportation officials will recommend changes to the roadway's geometry or signage along that curved stretch of Route 72.
