A new grocery store opened its doors in Chelsea on Wednesday, October 7, as German discount chain Lidl cut the ribbon on a more than 12,100-square-foot store at 335 8th Avenue near West 26th Street. The opening kicked off at 7:40 a.m. with gift cards, free samples and markdowns for the shoppers who showed up early, part of a fast-moving expansion that has now brought Lidl to four New York metro-area addresses in just six weeks.

The ribbon-cutting and opening-day details came from Lidl's own announcement, which described a store stocked with fresh produce, meat, pantry basics, international specialties and private-label staples, alongside a rotating selection of non-food merchandise that changes weekly. The new Chelsea location is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to the same release. New York Family reported that Lidl planned to open the Chelsea store; Lidl already had a presence in Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs.

Lidl's in-store bakery turns out fresh breads and pastries throughout the day, including what the company calls its famous butter croissant, priced at 49 cents. Per the retailer's release, early shoppers could also take advantage of special discounts across fresh produce, bakery goods and non-food items during the opening window.

Gift Cards and Giveaways Greet the First 100 Shoppers

The incentives went beyond markdowns. The first 100 customers in line received Lidl gift cards worth between $5 and $100, along with free samples and merchandise, according to whatnow.com. The rotating non-food section, which Lidl changes regularly, has included kitchen gadgets, home goods, seasonal items and clothing at other locations.

Part of a Six-Week Sprint Across the Five Boroughs

The Chelsea store was Lidl's fourth New York metro-area opening in a six-week stretch, the trade publication Progressive Grocer reported. The chain opened a Brooklyn store at 573 Grand Street on August 26, a Tappan location at 37 Route 303 on September 16, and a Staten Island store at 1545 Forest Avenue on September 30, ahead of the Chelsea debut.

That pace builds on a Manhattan push that began last year. Lidl opened a Lower East Side store at 408 Grand Street on August 1, 2025, per Storebrands. Modern Retail reports that the company's U.S. expansion has mainly focused on existing markets including New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta.

Discount Grocers Court New York's Deal-Hungry Shoppers

The Chelsea opening lands amid what Modern Retail has described as a discount-grocery renaissance in New York. Discount grocers like Aldi and Lidl are likely seeking out neighborhoods with shoppers eager for deals and less saturated with local competition, the outlet reported.

Lidl has built its reputation on recurring deals, including what it calls Wednesday Weekly Deals, rotating discounts on fresh produce, pantry staples and global brands, per the company's own materials.

Founded in Germany in the 1970s, Lidl now operates roughly 12,900 stores across 32 countries, according to the company. In the U.S., Lidl continues to expand, with the Chelsea location marking its latest expansion into Manhattan.
