Ye Rustic Inn, the Hillhurst Avenue dive bar that has poured drinks in Los Feliz since 1971, is bracing for the loss of its outdoor patio on Monday, and owner Susan Wood says she is now looking at laying off staff before Christmas. The bar has not announced that it is closing for good, and losing the patio would not shut down its indoor operations, but the uncertainty has sent regulars and neighbors scrambling to show support.

According to Yahoo News, Wood, who has owned the bar since 1999, said her landlord has attributed the patio's impending removal to insurance company concerns. She told the outlet she is looking at laying off people before Christmas because of the situation, and the report notes the bar has not formally announced that it is permanently closing. As KTLA reports, the landlord wants the outdoor space closed by Monday, and bar manager Michael Canaan said there has been little discussion about renewing the lease before the new year.

A Community Rallies Around a Neighborhood Fixture

Patrons gathered Wednesday evening in Los Feliz to show support for the bar, per the same KTLA account. Canaan said the gathering aimed to bring the neighborhood together and to appeal to the landlord directly. He added that the bar is willing to do what it takes to make the landlord feel safe and secure, a sign that Wood's side is still hoping for a path forward rather than an end.

Ye Rustic Inn's owner has tried to negotiate with the landlord, but the landlord has largely not responded to those efforts, the station's report notes. Regular Claire Timmons said the bar provides a neighborhood-family atmosphere, the kind of description that helps explain why its possible loss has resonated beyond its booths. The bar has operated for more than 50 years and has appeared on national best bar lists, known for its wings and booths full of regulars.

A City Councilmember Weighs In

Los Angeles councilmember and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman said she wants City Hall to support small businesses and avoid placing red tape in their way, according to the KTLA report. Raman said the mayor runs city departments and can work with them to ensure they are responsive, framing the bar's predicament as part of a broader challenge facing small, independent businesses across the city.

Ye Rustic Inn's situation lands amid a rough stretch for Los Angeles bars and restaurants. The city lost more than 100 restaurants and bars in 2025 alone, according to Los Angeles Magazine, which also cites New York Times figures showing 18,700 restaurant jobs vanished in the city between July 2019 and July 2025. The outlet points to rising commercial rents and landlords significantly raising lease costs when contracts expire as recurring hurdles for independent owners.

Part of a Wider Wave of Closures

The pressures compounding on restaurateurs go beyond rent. Eater LA reports that labor, ingredient costs, industry slowdowns, the 2025 fires and ongoing ICE enforcement have all continued to strain restaurant owners operating on razor-thin margins through 2026. That outlet also documented the September closures of Macleod Ale Brewing Co. in Van Nuys and Electric Owl, a decade-old Hollywood hangout, both shutting their doors within weeks of each other.

Other closures have hit even closer to Ye Rustic Inn's own neighborhood and scene. Everson Royce Bar in the Arts District announced it would end its 11-year run on December 20, citing Los Angeles as what it called a disturbingly difficult place to do business in, per KTLA. West Hollywood's Employees Only closed on September 27, citing inflation, high wages and the cost of goods. Los Feliz itself has seen this kind of loss before: Good Luck Bar ended its 25-year run on Hillhurst in 2019 after its building was bought by a developer planning a boutique hotel, a shift Eater LA described at the time as part of a broader sea change in the neighborhood.

For now, Ye Rustic Inn's fate remains unresolved. No closing date has been announced, and the bar's indoor operations are expected to continue even if the patio goes dark Monday. Patrons and staff are hoping the landlord will change her mind and let the half-century-old Los Feliz institution keep its doors, and its wings, open.
