A hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian identified as Montazja Langley near the 1101 block of Bardstown Road in Louisville early Saturday morning, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. She was struck around 4:22 a.m., rushed to University of Louisville Hospital, and pronounced dead from blunt-force injuries at 4:54 a.m. The driver did not stop.
Details about Langley's age are in dispute between outlets covering the case. The Courier-Journal reported that the victim was a 2-year-old girl, attributing that detail to deputy coroner Dan Alpiger, while a separate account from wdrbwave.com described the victim as a woman who died after being struck in the same collision. Both reports agree that the coroner's office identified her as Montazja Langley and confirmed the cause of death as blunt-force injuries. Neither outlet's account of her age has been independently reconciled.
The coroner's office characterized the incident as a hit-and-run pedestrian strike, and the station's report notes that the Louisville Metro Police Department had not responded to a request for additional details at the time of publication. No information about the driver, the vehicle involved, or the direction it fled has been released.
A Corridor With a Troubled Safety History
Bardstown Road has drawn scrutiny from traffic engineers for years. A Louisville Metro government safety study from December 2018 found that the corridor averaged nine pedestrian strikes per year, calling it one of the highest concentrations of such crashes in the city, and found that crosswalks along the stretch were substandard and in need of enhancement, according to the Louisville Metro government study.
Saturday's crash is not the only pedestrian fatality reported along the corridor this fall. On Oct. 10, a man died after being struck by a vehicle while walking near Bardstown Road and Fegenbush Lane, an LMPD spokesperson told The Courier-Journal. In August, police said they were searching for the driver of an unknown vehicle that struck and killed a woman near Louisville's Park Hill neighborhood before driving off, according to WDRB.
Families Pushing for Tougher Penalties
The Bardstown Road crash adds to a string of pedestrian deaths that have pushed some Louisville families to demand policy changes. Adam Troutman, 27, was hit and killed in April while walking on a section of Vaughn Mill Road that had no sidewalk, and Louisville Metro later approved $182,000 to build a sidewalk along that stretch, per the same wdrbwave.com account. Kentucky state police records cited by Rep. Chris Lewis show that 27 people were killed and nearly 1,300 were injured in hit-and-run crashes statewide in 2024, a toll that has fueled calls for tougher penalties under Kentucky law.
No arrest, citation, or other enforcement action connected to Langley's death has been confirmed. The circumstances of the collision, including how it unfolded and what led the driver to leave the scene, remain unknown as the investigation continues.
