Valley Children's Hospital in Madera lifted a campus-wide lockdown Friday after an anonymous caller threatened around 11 a.m. to show up with a rifle and a bomb, sending deputies and a helicopter racing to the scene before investigators concluded no danger was ever present. The hospital's main and emergency department entrances have since reopened, though an increased law enforcement presence remains on campus as a precaution.

Hospital officials confirmed the lockdown was initiated after the threat was called in late Friday morning, according to Valley Children's Hospital, which stated that the campus-wide lockdown began after the hospital and local law enforcement received the threat. The caller reportedly told authorities he intended to come to the hospital armed with a rifle and a bomb, as reported by GV Wire.

Madera County Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers responded to and investigated at the scene, per The Fresno Bee. A CHP helicopter circled the area as authorities searched for danger, according to KMPH Fox 26, whose reporting indicated Madera police had received a phone threat from a man who said he was headed to the hospital armed.

No Sighting, No Contact, No Danger Found

Despite the scale of the response, hospital officials reported there was no sighting or contact with any individual during the lockdown, according to YourCentralValley.com. Authorities ultimately found no threat on the premises, the same KMPH Fox 26 report noted, and the hospital was cleared to resume normal entry procedures.

Hospital officials said established safety protocols were followed and staff coordinated with law enforcement throughout the response, the same hospital statement noted. A hospital spokesperson said patient, family and team member safety and security remain the highest priority, according to KMPH Fox 26's reporting.

Investigators Suspect the Threat Was Fabricated

Investigators believe the threats may have been intentionally fabricated, the Fresno Bee reported, attributing that assessment to the Madera County Sheriff's Office. Detectives are investigating the source of the phone call, and the Madera County Sheriff's Office said it is committed to identifying those responsible and holding them accountable, per KMPH Fox 26. The investigation remains active and ongoing, the Fresno Bee's report added.

The scare in Madera echoes a similar episode in Southern California two months earlier, when a bomb threat at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena was ultimately deemed a swatting call, with an all-clear issued roughly four hours after the call came in, according to the Los Angeles Times. In that incident, the Pasadena hospital temporarily diverted incoming emergency-room traffic to other facilities, though patients and staff were not evacuated, and the threat prompted police officers, fire personnel and K-9 units to search the building. The Times also noted that Huntington Hospital had been targeted by a swatting call in March 2025, which authorities attributed to a disgruntled patient.

For now, Valley Children's Hospital in Madera is back to normal operations, with only the main and emergency department entrances open as extra law enforcement monitors the campus. The hospital said it will maintain that increased presence while continuing to work with investigators as they look into who made the call and why.
