Part of a Broader Pattern on Washington Roads
The Marysville case lands amid a statewide conversation about cycling safety. Washington recorded 12 bicyclist deaths in both 2024 and 2025, down from a peak of 17 in 2023, according to data reported by Seattle Bike Blog. The outlet also noted that preliminary 2025 figures showed 659 total traffic fatalities statewide, a 10.5 percent drop from 2024 and an 18 percent drop from 2023, even as pedestrian deaths remained high at 148 for the year.
Separately, a Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center doctor who focuses on transportation safety told Axios that speed is a major factor behind a rise in injury-causing e-bike and e-scooter crashes, according to Axios. Washington's Traffic Safety Commission also maintains traffic safety dashboards organized by year and county.
Fatal E-Bike Crashes Have Made Headlines Elsewhere
Marysville's crash follows a string of fatal e-bike incidents reported around the country in recent weeks. In Pacific Beach, a 14-year-old boy named Owen Harris died after his e-bike collided with a Tesla; police told NBC 7 San Diego he had turned onto Balboa Avenue against a red signal before being struck.
In Wilson, North Carolina, a man and woman died after the electric bicycle they were riding was struck by a vehicle around 5:10 a.m. on Sept. 24 in the 2800 block of Tilghman Road, according to CBS 17. And in Fairfax City, Virginia, a 13-year-old bicyclist riding a pedal-assist e-bike was killed on Sept. 9 when a garbage truck pulling forward from a shopping-center exit struck him as he entered a crosswalk, FFXnow reported.
Unlike those cases, Marysville police say no other vehicle was involved in Saturday's fatal fall. The investigation into exactly what happened near 10th Street and Alder Avenue remains active.
