A 44-year-old man was stabbed multiple times in the neck and back Tuesday afternoon outside a building on West 109th Street on Manhattan's Upper West Side, according to police. The attack happened around 1:30 p.m. near 312 West 109th Street, between Riverside Drive and Broadway, and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
A police spokesperson told West Side Rag that officers could not confirm whether the stabbing happened inside 312 West 109th Street or on the sidewalk out front. That distinction matters beyond the immediate investigation: the address houses a supportive housing facility run by Praxis Housing Initiatives, Inc., according to Maptons, and whether the attack occurred inside could determine if mandatory incident-reporting rules for state-regulated shelters come into play.
Under New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance regulations updated in January 2025, certified emergency shelters must report violent assaults and serious safety incidents to state regulators within one business day, Hoodline has previously reported. Police said they did not have information Tuesday about what led up to the attack, and no arrests had been made as of the latest update.
Victim Recovering, Investigation Ongoing
The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Morningside, located at 1111 Amsterdam Avenue, which operates an American College of Surgeons-verified Level II Trauma Center serving Upper Manhattan and Morningside Heights, per the Mount Sinai Health System. He remained in stable condition, per the station's report. The NYPD said it is investigating the stabbing, though no suspect has been named publicly in official statements.
Preliminary emergency dispatch alerts from the day of the attack described a fleeing male suspect holding an ice pick, roughly 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, last seen heading eastbound on West 109th Street toward Broadway, according to LiveUAMap. Those dispatch details were not included in initial police statements to the press.
What Charges Could Follow
Under New York Penal Law § 120.05, intentionally causing physical injury to another person with a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument constitutes Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D violent felony carrying two to seven years in prison, according to Saland Law. If prosecutors determine the victim suffered serious physical injury — defined as injury creating a substantial risk of death or protracted health impairment — the charge could elevate under Penal Law § 120.10 to Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison, per Lebedin Kofman LLP. Which charge ultimately applies will likely hinge on medical findings from the victim's treatment at Mount Sinai Morningside.
A Precinct With a Troubled Recent Stretch
The 109th Street address falls within the jurisdiction of the NYPD's 24th Precinct, headquartered at 151 West 100th Street and covering the Upper West Side from West 86th Street up to Cathedral Parkway, according to NYC.gov. The precinct previously responded to a stabbing along the nearby Broadway corridor in December 2025, when a 23-year-old man was stabbed in the back on the 96th Street subway platform following a dispute, per Chelsea News NY.
No arrests have been announced, and the NYPD's investigation remains ongoing.
