A Residential Corridor With a Troubled History
Middle Avenue has seen deadly gun violence before. In March 2022, a fatal shooting occurred on the adjacent 700 block of the same street when 47-year-old local business owner Eddie Green was shot in the abdomen inside his commercial garage following an argument over money, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Allegheny County Police's Homicide Unit also investigated a non-fatal shooting in November 2022 on Wilmerding's 100 block of Watkins Avenue, where a 28-year-old man was shot on a front porch and hospitalized in stable condition.
Wilmerding is a small borough of roughly 1,700 residents located about 12 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, covering under one square mile, per Census data. The borough contracts its routine policing to neighboring Pitcairn, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. County detectives are leading this investigation.
Economic Strain in the Mon Valley
Wilmerding recorded a median household income of $36,467 in 2024, reflecting economic pressures common across Allegheny County's Mon Valley municipalities, many of which rely on shared regional or county resources rather than their own police departments.
