A man died after being struck by a vehicle in Sacramento early Saturday, and the driver was nowhere to be found by the time officers arrived. Sacramento police officers responded at 4:45 a.m. to a call about a vehicle hitting a pedestrian near the 400 block of Bannon Street, south of Richards Boulevard.
Sacramento police officers found an adult man with life-threatening injuries at the scene, according to KCRA. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but he died at the scene. The other driver involved was not present when officers arrived, and the Sacramento Police Department said it had no suspect information to release yet.
Major Collisions Unit Takes Over the Investigation
The Major Collisions Investigation Unit and crime scene investigators are now handling the case, the station's report states. No details about the make, model or direction of the vehicle involved have been made public, and it remains unclear whether anyone witnessed the crash.
The Bannon Street death adds to a string of recent hit-and-run and pedestrian fatalities across the Sacramento region. Earlier this month, 48-year-old William Allen Spears Jr. of Sacramento was struck and killed on Folsom Boulevard, according to ABC10. Investigators said Spears was in the roadway outside a marked crosswalk when he was hit, and the driver fled without stopping to render aid or notify law enforcement.
A Pattern of Deadly Roads
Other recent crashes point to the same grim pattern. A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on northbound Interstate 5 near Sacramento International Airport, struck around 3:42 a.m. near the airport off-ramp, as reported by FOX40; that crash also remained under investigation. Not every recent case involved a driver who fled, though. In Sacramento's Elder Creek neighborhood, a man died after being struck by a vehicle, but The Sacramento Bee reported the driver remained at the scene and that alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor. In the city's Meadowview neighborhood, a 41-year-old man was arrested in connection with a separate fatal hit-and-run near Florin Road and 24th Street, where fire personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, the newspaper's report notes.
Deaths Mounting Across Sacramento
The toll is already weighing on city and county data. Sacramento police reported 40 people killed in vehicle crashes in 2025, while Sacramento County's coroner recorded 103 traffic deaths across the broader county that year — a figure that includes drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, according to CBS Sacramento. Less than two weeks into 2026, six people had already died on city streets, the station separately reported.
Traffic safety remains a concern in the region. For now, the circumstances behind Saturday's death on Bannon Street remain under investigation, with no suspect identified.
