A man is dead and a woman remains hospitalized after a shooting Saturday morning near Marshall Avenue and Timber Drive in Newport News, according to police. Officers were sent to the area after a ShotSpotter alert went off around 11:32 a.m., and found both victims outside suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to WAVY, officers responded to the area and located an adult male and another adult victim, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to a local hospital for treatment of what police described as life-threatening injuries. The man died from his injuries at the hospital, while the woman was still receiving treatment, per the same report.
As 13News Now reported, police said the woman suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries of her own, though her condition beyond that has not been detailed publicly. Detectives have been canvassing the area for witnesses, and the department's forensics unit has been processing the scene for evidence.
Investigation Remains Active
The investigation is ongoing, the station's report notes, and no further details about a possible suspect, motive, or how the shooting unfolded have been released. Police have asked anyone with information to come forward, and they can submit an anonymous tip by calling 1-888-LOCK-U-UP, downloading the P3 tips app, or visiting P3tips.com.
The shooting comes as Newport News officials have been pointing to improving citywide gun violence numbers for 2026. Earlier this year, the police chief and mayor highlighted mid-year data showing homicides were down 9% for the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same stretch in 2025, according to a separate report from WAVY.
Nonfatal Shootings Also Down This Year
That same mid-year briefing noted nonfatal shootings had fallen 54% over the same period, a trend officials attributed in part to aggressive enforcement. Police also said nearly 80 guns had recently been confiscated as part of that broader effort, though it remains unclear whether Saturday's shooting will factor into the city's year-end totals.
