Armored Vehicle Rolls In As Standoff Drags On
Richmond Police deployed roughly six officers in body armor and helmets behind an armored tactical vehicle, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, with VCU Police assisting on scene. That response escalated into a full tactical operation, with SWAT personnel using an armored BearCat vehicle and its public-address system to command occupants to exit before ultimately breaching the door under a judicially authorized search warrant.
When officers finally forced their way inside Monday night, they confirmed the shooting suspect was not in the home, according to the same Instagram post. The suspect had apparently already fled before the hours-long standoff even began, despite the scene initially being treated as an active barricade situation. Richmond Police have not released a physical description or identity for the suspect who remains at large.
VCU Warns Students To Steer Clear Of Carver
The shooting occurred on Kinney Street. VCU issued an emergency safety alert at about 4:27 p.m. Monday, according to posts shared on Reddit’s VCU community.
Separately, on September 28, VCU Police arrested a suspect who fired multiple shots near a university residential facility at West Broad and North Belvidere Streets, an incident Hoodline covered in its report on the arrest near the VCU dorm, which resulted in no injuries and a rapid arrest outside the dormitory.
Detectives Seek Tips Amid String Of Recent Shootings
Richmond Police Major Crimes Division Detective A. Sleem is leading the homicide investigation into the Kinney Street shooting. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or submit a tip through the P3 Tips app.
The Kinney Street killing follows a string of recent violent crime cases Richmond detectives have been juggling across the city. A shooting on St. John Street occurred Wednesday night, September 30, and the victim was fighting for his life when reported, as detailed in Hoodline’s report on the St. John Street shooting.
Despite the recent cluster of incidents, Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards has reported that the city recorded 22 homicides through early July, a 33% decline compared to the 33 homicides logged during the same stretch of 2025, according to Hoodline’s earlier coverage of a fatal shooting at Everette and 11th. Carver’s own crime history stretches back decades: the neighborhood was targeted in the 1990s by Richmond’s Neighborhoods in Bloom revitalization program, which reduced local crime by 19%, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, even as recent years have brought growing tension as private developers convert single-family homes into VCU student housing.
