A man and a young girl were pulled from an overturned car Tuesday morning after their vehicle rolled over in the parking lot of a Walgreens on North Main Street in Anderson, South Carolina. Firefighters had to cut away the vehicle's roof to free both occupants, who were injured and trapped inside before crews could reach them.
The Anderson Fire Department confirmed crews responded to the rollover around 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Walgreens lot, according to FOX Carolina. The store sits at 2811 N. Main St., according to ScriptSave WellRx.
Once on scene, fire crews removed the vehicle's roof to extricate the trapped man and girl, per the station's report. Both the man and the girl were treated at the scene before being transported for further care.
Victims Taken to Regional Trauma Center
The man and girl were taken to AnMed Medical Center, a 461-bed hospital on North Fant Street in downtown Anderson that houses the region's Level III Trauma Center, per the South Carolina Department of Public Health. Their conditions have not been released, and it remains unclear what led the vehicle to overturn inside the parking lot, whether from speed before entering the lot, a curb strike, or another vehicle, an open question the original report did not resolve.
The Anderson Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash, the same article notes. Despite the crash occurring on private commercial property, officers have clear authority under South Carolina law to investigate wrecks in parking lots and pursue charges when evidence supports it, according to guidance cited by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Because the crash resulted in injuries, state law under Section 56-5-1270 also requires a formal written report to be filed with state authorities, per Hartman Law Firm.
Crash Investigation Falls to City Traffic Division
The Anderson Police Department lists traffic among its operational areas and has a DUI Traffic Unit, according to the City of Anderson Police Department. The department is investigating the crash.
Tuesday's crash did not result in any reported deaths.
