A man was found with a gunshot wound near Holyoke's own police station Sunday afternoon, prompting a response from local detectives and state troopers while investigators work to piece together what happened. The shooting unfolded around 1 p.m. in the area of Nick Cosmos Way, just outside the Holyoke Police Department's doorstep.
Holyoke police officers responded to the 0-100 block of Nick Cosmos Way at about 1 p.m. Sunday after a report of a shooting, according to wwlp.com. Officers arriving on scene found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound, the station reported. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, though his condition was not known at the time.
The shooting also drew coverage from Western Mass News, which first reported that officers responded to a shooting near their police station on Nick Cosmos Way Sunday. According to masslive.com, it remains unclear how badly the victim was wounded, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting.
Investigators Say No Threat Remains
Holyoke Police Detectives and Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office are jointly investigating the shooting, per the same wwlp.com report. Officials said there is no further risk to the public, though they have not released details on a possible motive or suspect. The Hampden District Attorney's Office said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
The shooting is the latest in a string of gun violence incidents Holyoke has grappled with this year. In a separate case this year, police responded to a ShotSpotter activation near North East Street around 10:10 p.m. on a Tuesday, where two men with gunshot wounds turned up at a local hospital without disclosing where the shooting actually took place, wwlp.com reported. One suspect was arrested after a foot chase in that incident and charged with trespassing, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Earlier Shooting Led to Arrest
Another Holyoke shooting in July left a victim with serious but non-life-threatening injuries on the 200 block of Maple Street, according to Western Mass News. Police identified 40-year-old Jose Carrasquillo-Rodriguez of Holyoke as a suspect in that case and later arrested him. No such suspect identification has been made in Sunday's shooting.
For now, the circumstances surrounding the Nick Cosmos Way shooting remain under investigation, with no arrests announced and the victim's condition still not disclosed publicly. Anyone with information is expected to be directed to investigators as the Hampden District Attorney's Office continues to review the case.
