A man was injured after being struck by a vehicle on the H-1 eastbound on-ramp near Kunia Road.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that a man was injured after being struck by a car on the H-1 eastbound on-ramp in Kunia.
Police have said speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors at this time, and no citations have been announced as investigators continue working the case.
A Freeway Ramp Where Walking Is Already Against the Rules
Hawaii's Complete Streets law, codified under Hawaii Revised Statutes § 264-20.5, mandates accessible transportation design for pedestrians on public highways and includes an exception concerning interstate corridors, according to Justia Law. The provision addresses interstate corridors separately from other public highways.
Even so, state law does not let drivers off the hook simply because a pedestrian is outside a crosswalk. Hawaii Revised Statutes § 291C-73 requires pedestrians crossing outside a marked or unmarked intersection crosswalk to yield the right-of-way to vehicles, per the Hawaii State Legislature. At the same time, § 291C-74 imposes a statutory duty on drivers to exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians on any roadway, including sounding the horn when necessary, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Maintenance Work Was Already Underway on the Corridor
The crash comes amid scheduled roadwork in the immediate area. For the week of October 10 through October 16, the Hawaii Department of Transportation had roving shoulder closures planned along the H-1 Freeway between the Kalaeloa Interchange and the Kunia off-ramps for routine highway maintenance.
A multi-car crash near the H-1 Kunia off-ramp involved a child and a woman who were in serious condition, KITV4 reported.
Hawaii's Traffic Fatalities Remain a Concern
Hawaii recorded 129 traffic deaths in 2025, the state's highest annual total since 2007, with Oahu accounting for 82 of those fatalities, Civil Beat reported.
Hoodline reported this week on a 25-year-old killed on Kupuohi Street in Waipahu.
