A man was shot and killed in the 1200 block of Hamilton Avenue in St. Louis's Hamilton Heights neighborhood early Friday, with police saying the gunfire erupted around 12:40 a.m. Homicide detectives were called to the scene as investigators work to piece together what led to the killing.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported the shooting occurred around 12:40 a.m., according to FOX 2. Emergency dispatch records show the call went out at approximately 12:41 a.m., per Cedar News, with calls initially routing officers to Hamilton Avenue before homicide detectives were requested to take over the investigation. As of Friday morning, the investigation remained ongoing, and no suspect information has been released.

A Neighborhood That's Seen Repeated Violence

Hamilton Heights, a neighborhood of roughly 2,200 to 2,800 residents patrolled by SLMPD's Fifth District, has had several recent police responses to shootings. In October 2025, District 5 officers responded to a shooting that left one person dead and four others injured; homicide detectives were called to investigate.

Just weeks ago, Hoodline reported a fatal shooting on Plymouth Avenue in the same neighborhood. Hamilton Avenue itself has also seen gunfire before: in January 2025, an argument in the 1600 block escalated into shots fired that left a 40-year-old man with a graze wound before he fled to nearby Hodiamont Avenue for help, as Hoodline reported at the time.

A prior fatal shooting on Hamilton

SLMPD reported a separate Hamilton Heights fatal shooting on June 2, 2025. Officers responding shortly after 10 a.m. to a call in the 1300 block of Hamilton found the victim in an alley in the 5900 block of Romaine Place, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Citywide totals offer a broader backdrop

The killing comes as St. Louis reports a lower citywide homicide total than in recent years. Through the first nine months of 2026, the city had recorded 88 homicides—the first time since 2013 the total was below 100 at that point in the year, according to KMOV. The city recorded 109 homicides through September 2025 and 119 through the same point in 2024.

SLMPD CompStat figures show the city recorded 140 homicides in 2025, down 7.3% from 151 in 2024. That marked a fifth consecutive annual decline and a nearly 47% reduction since 2020. Separately, the Council on Criminal Justice found that St. Louis's homicide rate in the first half of 2025 was 40% below its 2019 level, compared with an average 14% decline across the major U.S. cities in the study.

Documented violence-intervention work

City records document violence-intervention work serving Hamilton Heights and nearby Wells-Goodfellow. A July 14, 2020, City of St. Louis announcement said the Cure Violence site serving the two neighborhoods had been operational since June 1. The Giffords Law Center has also described the area's historical concentration of gun violence in its review of local strategies.

Under Missouri law, first-degree murder is a Class A felony punishable by death or life without parole; second-degree murder carries 10 to 30 years or life with parole eligibility.
