An adult man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in North St. Louis, police say, in a shooting that happened around 5 p.m. in the 4200 block of Linton Avenue. The victim died from his injuries, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, and homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.
FOX 2 reported that the shooting fell within the Fairgrounds neighborhood, a stretch of North St. Louis that has seen repeated gun violence in recent years. FOX 2 said it plans to update its report as more information becomes available, and no suspect or motive has been disclosed.
This is not the first deadly shooting on this stretch of Linton Avenue. In July, a late-night shooting on the 2100 block of the same street killed 17-year-old Tashawn Hudson and injured two other teens, according to KSDK. In that case, homicide detectives also took over the investigation after two wounded teens were privately dropped off at a hospital.
A Neighborhood With a Troubled Recent History
Violence has not been confined to Linton Avenue. In April 2025, a shooting at nearby Fairground Park left one person dead and four injured, prompting police officials to report that North Patrol and District 6 patrol plans were specifically targeting the area to reduce violence, KSDK reported at the time. Neighborhood residents told reporters then that minor disputes frequently escalated into gun violence around the park.
The Fairgrounds neighborhood itself carries deep historical roots. It is anchored by Fairground Park, which occupies the site of former 19th-century agricultural grounds that were converted into barracks during the Civil War. The City eventually bought the grounds, and the park was dedicated in 1909, according to the City of St. Louis. The neighborhood is bounded by Grand Avenue, Emily Street, Warne Avenue, and Fairground Park.
Other violent crimes have occurred just blocks away over the years. In 2024, a 24-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in a May 2022 fatal shooting in the 4200 block of Obear Avenue, per the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
Citywide Numbers Tell a Different Story
Even as Linton Avenue sees repeat violence, St. Louis's overall homicide numbers have been trending sharply downward. The city recorded 63 homicides through the first six months of 2026, down from 71 during the same period in 2025, according to Hoodline's prior reporting on a separate North St. Louis shooting. For all of 2025, the city recorded 139 homicides.
Still, structural challenges persist in parts of North St. Louis. A 2022 analysis by the Center for Policing Equity found that Police District 4, which covers portions of North St. Louis, was among the city's most understaffed districts relative to 911 call volume, with researchers recommending that assignments be reallocated across districts to balance workloads.
