A man was critically injured overnight after being shot in the stomach at a parking lot along Rainier Avenue South in Rainier Beach, according to Seattle police. Officers who responded to reports of shots fired found the man and treated him before medics arrived, police said, and he was later taken to a hospital for further care.
According to KIRO 7 News Seattle, the Seattle Fire Department reported that paramedics treated an approximately 30-year-old man before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition. Seattle police, for their part, described the man as being in critical condition. Gun Violence Reduction Unit detectives investigated the shooting both at the scene and at the hospital, per police.
Detectives Investigate as South Seattle Shootings Mount
Police responded at around 2:30 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2026.
The shooting adds to what The Seattle Times has described as alarming patterns in the city's gun violence. In a report tied to a separate Rainier Beach parking lot shooting that left five people wounded — including two who were critically injured — the newspaper noted that police found dozens of shell casings from two different guns at that scene, with a photograph showing at least 96 evidence markers clustered around a couple of parked cars, as reported by The Seattle Times.
Task Force Numbers Paint a Grim Picture
The same Seattle Times report detailed the scale of the city's response to repeated gun violence. In July alone, Seattle police responded to 18 shooting scenes where officers collected 20 or more shell casings, the paper found. A police task force of roughly 50 detectives and officers has arrested 29 people and seized 26 guns, Assistant Chief Eric Barden said, according to the same account.
Barden also said that, based on police intelligence, the majority of identified shooters are between 16 and 22 years old. By the time of a virtual community meeting about public safety in Rainier Beach, police had recovered 763 guns, the newspaper reported.
Other Recent Incidents in South Seattle
Separately, the Seattle Police Department Blotter reported that one man was killed and one woman was injured in a South Seattle shooting involving a 36-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman — though the available details on that incident remain limited, and nothing ties it to the Rainier Beach shooting reported overnight. The blotter also documented an earlier drive-by shooting in South Seattle in April that injured a young man in the Rainier Valley and shut down multiple intersections, according to the Seattle Police Department Blotter.
It remains unclear whether the overnight shooting is connected to any of these other South Seattle incidents. No updated condition for the man injured overnight has been released since he was taken to Harborview.
