A man died after being shot multiple times late Sunday on the 2200 block of North Gratz Street in North Philadelphia, setting off a homicide investigation with no suspects or motive identified so far.
Police were called to the block around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, according to 6abc Philadelphia, where officers found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He later died, the station reported. As of the station's report, there was no word on a motive or suspects.
Investigation Still in Early Stages
The station's report makes clear just how little is publicly known at this point. No weapon has been described, no suspect identified, and no arrest announced in connection with the shooting. A homicide investigation remains underway, per the same account, and police have not released further details about what led to the gunfire.
North Gratz Street has seen repeated violence in recent memory. In one earlier incident reported by CBS News Philadelphia, a shooting on the 2200 block of North Gratz Street just before 9:30 p.m. left a 3-year-old boy, a 34-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man wounded; all three were taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition. Victims in that case told police the shooters drove up and opened fire while they were sitting outside, and authorities said they did not know whether the victims were the intended targets. No weapons were recovered and no arrests were made.
A Pattern of Gunfire in the Area
Nearby blocks have also seen bursts of violence investigated for possible connections. CBS News Philadelphia reported that police looked into whether two shootings roughly 15 minutes apart on a Friday night, one near the 2100 block of North Gratz Street around 8:15 p.m. that left a young adult male in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, and another near North 25th and West Elkhart streets around 8:30 p.m. that sent a 23-year-old man to Temple Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back in stable condition, were connected despite the sites being nearly two miles apart. Roughly 20 spent shell casings were found at the Gratz Street scene, according to the outlet.
A separate 6abc report on that same pair of incidents described the second shooting location as 24th and Elkhart streets, where officers recovered between 25 and 30 shell casings but found no victim there. The two outlets' accounts differ on the exact cross street, but both describe police examining whether the close timing of the shootings pointed to a connection.
What the Citywide Data Shows
Philadelphia's shooting toll is tracked at the city and district-attorney level, though that data does not speak to Sunday's case specifically. The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office publishes a periodic breakdown, called the IAC Sankey, covering homicide and non-fatal shooting incidents, and its September 2026 snapshot notes that the graphics include incidents that did not result in an arrest, according to the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. That same data snapshot explains that when a shooting involves multiple victims, it is counted as a single incident rather than multiple cases, which shapes how citywide shooting totals are reported. The city also maintains a running shooting-victims dataset dating back to 2015, per data.phila.gov, though no incident count or trend figure tied to that dataset was available for this story.
For now, the death on North Gratz Street adds another open case to a stretch of North Philadelphia that has already drawn repeated police response this year. Anyone with information has not yet been directed to a specific tip line in the available reporting, and investigators have released no further details on a motive, suspect description or weapon.
