A man was shot near the Highland Cove apartments in Waco, with police converging on the 4300 block of Lake Shore Drive after officials reported that one man had been shot. The victim was transferred to a local hospital, though his condition remains unknown, and no suspect has been arrested as the investigation continues.
Police received a call reporting the shooting shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to KWTX. Officers were still working the scene near the apartment complex as the investigation got underway, and the outlet's report did not include details on how the victim was transported or what led up to the shooting.
Investigation Still in Early Stages
As of the report, no suspect had been taken into custody, and the station's account did not specify a motive, weapon, or how many shots were fired. The victim's name, age and current medical status have not been released. Police have not said whether anyone else was hurt.
The shooting is not the only violent incident reported along the same Lake Shore Drive corridor. A man died in a shooting at the Pecan Ridge Apartments, located at 2736 Lake Shore Drive, on a Saturday night, Waco police said Sunday, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald. Highland Cove itself was also the site of a stabbing reported by FOX 44 News, in which police said a fight broke out between James Hernandez and Lazaro Pena over an air mattress before Lazaro's brother, Pedro Pena, stabbed Hernandez; Hernandez was taken to the hospital for his injuries while Lazaro Pena was treated for facial injuries, per that outlet.
A Wider Pattern of Violence in Waco
The Richland Hills neighborhood has also seen deadly violence, with a shooting there leaving one man dead and a teenager wounded, Waco police told the Tribune-Herald in a separate report. Taken together, the incidents point to a pattern of gun violence spread across several Waco apartment communities and neighborhoods, even as the city's overall crime picture has moved in a different direction.
Citywide data reported by the Tribune-Herald showed Waco recorded nine homicides in the first half of the year, an 80% jump compared with five homicides in the same period the previous year. At the same time, total violent crime was down during that stretch, leaving a split picture as homicides climbed.
No further updates on the Highland Cove shooting victim's condition or any arrest have been released. Hoodline will update this story as new information becomes available.
