A man was shot on Jacksonville's Westside Tuesday evening, suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound near Texas Street at Cahoon Road before being taken to the hospital for treatment. Police have not released a suspect description, and the investigation remains active.
Officers arrived at the scene around 6:18 p.m. on October 20, according to News4JAX. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it believes the shooting was an isolated incident, though as of the station's report, detectives had no description of a suspect to share publicly.
Another Isolated Shooting Adds to a Troubling Pattern
The Texas Street shooting is the latest in a string of non-fatal Westside gunfire incidents that JSO has repeatedly described as isolated rather than connected to any broader threat. Just seven days earlier, two men in their mid-20s were shot along the 1300 block of Cassat Avenue, an incident Hoodline reported was also characterized by police as an isolated case in its earlier coverage. Both of those victims survived with non-life-threatening wounds.
The pattern stretches back further. In August, a verbal altercation outside a home near 103rd Street and Old Middleburg Road escalated into gunfire that left a man in his late 40s with a leg wound, after a dispute between a boyfriend and an ex-husband. In July, police swarmed a 103rd Street block after reports of shots fired. Taken together, the incidents point to a recurring dynamic on the Westside: personal arguments that turn violent with a firearm nearby.
Citywide Numbers Point the Other Direction
The individual shootings stand in contrast to the city's broader crime trend. Sheriff T.K. Waters told residents at a July town hall that overall crime in Jacksonville fell 16 percent in 2025, with violent crime down 8 percent and property crime down 17 percent, according to News4JAX.
Of the more than 100 homicides recorded citywide in 2025, JSO reported that only one was officially classified as gang- or group-affiliated, a shift the station's reporting says reflects more isolated interpersonal disputes rather than organized violence. That trend may help explain why JSO so often labels Westside shootings, including Tuesday's, as isolated incidents without an ongoing public threat.
Investigators Lean on Camera Network, Seek Tips
To identify suspects in cases lacking witness descriptions, JSO relies on ConnectDuval, an integrated surveillance network of roughly 11,000 public and private cameras that lets detectives pull footage quickly during violent crime investigations. The network includes public and private cameras.
Anyone with information about the Texas Street shooting is asked to call JSO's non-emergency line at 904-630-0500. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
The shooting comes the same week Hoodline reported on a fatal confrontation in Durkeeville, where a 70-year-old man was charged after an argument with a neighbor turned deadly, underscoring how frequently disputes across Duval County neighborhoods are ending in gunfire this fall. No arrests have been announced in the Texas Street case, and JSO's investigation remains ongoing.
