Same Stretch of Road Saw a Teen Shot Earlier This Year
Monday's shooting happened in the same stretch of South Military Highway where a 16-year-old girl was shot on Jan. 20, per the same station's earlier report. In that case, police said the call came in around 5:30 p.m., also in the 700 block, and the girl was transported to the hospital in stable condition. No suspects were in custody at the time, and police described it as an active investigation.
The South Military Highway shooting also follows another recent case in Virginia Beach. A juvenile male was shot at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of King Henry Court, off Regency Drive, around 6 a.m. on a Wednesday earlier this month, according to Hoodline's prior coverage. Police said they found the juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound and that EMS transported him to an area hospital for treatment. The same report noted a separate case in which a person was shot during a reported robbery on Runaway Bay Drive.
Citywide Shooting Numbers Trending Down
Despite the string of recent incidents, Virginia Beach's overall shooting numbers have been falling. As of Sept. 30, the department had reported 26 shootings in 2026, down from 33 during the same period in 2025, according to wtkr.com. Deputy Chief Brad Wesseler said shooting incidents citywide are down more than 21% year to date, and police officials said the figure marks the lowest number of shootings recorded over the past four years.
Wesseler also said shooting incidents have decreased by over 50% since 2023 when measured over the comparable time frame. A separate report from the same television station's news site found that citywide shooting incidents have declined by 21.2% over the past four years, with a 52.7% overall reduction in shootings since 2023. That report also noted a 65% drop in the 4th Precinct and a 50% drop in the 2nd Precinct over that span. The Virginia Beach Police Department makes annual and weekly reports on the state of policing available for residents to review on its department data page.
Police had not released additional details about Monday's shooting as of the latest update, and the investigation remains active. Anyone with information is encouraged to follow updates from Virginia Beach police as the case develops.
