A man was shot in the road outside Universal Audenried Charter School in South Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with investigators still searching for answers about who fired the shots and why.
The shooting happened just before 4 p.m. on Tasker Street, according to NBC10 Philadelphia, which reported seeing several shell casings and evidence markers scattered in front of the school. Telemundo 62 pinpointed the time at about 3:49 p.m. near South 32nd and Tasker streets, reporting that the adult victim was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition. The shooting occurred as students were being dismissed, and nothing in the available reporting ties the victim to Universal Audenried.
Investigators marked bullet casings on the roadway close to a vehicle at the scene, per the same outlet's reporting. As of the latest update, no arrests had been made and no weapon had been recovered, and the investigation remained active. Philadelphia police are asking anyone with information to call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online.
Another Shooting on the Same Street
Tasker Street has seen other shootings. An 80-year-old man was shot in the head and neck on the 2600 block of Tasker Street in September 2023, according to 6abc, which also reported that no arrests had been made in that case. The available evidence does not establish any connection between the two shootings.
Student Shootings Have Fallen, But Afternoons Remain a Risk
The shooting near Universal Audenried comes as citywide data show a long decline in gun violence involving Philadelphia's school-aged population, even though afternoon hours remain a persistent danger zone. A Chalkbeat analysis found that 230 school-aged youth were shot during the 2025-2026 school year, including 78 active School District of Philadelphia students, with 55% being former students and the remainder never enrolled in the district at all.
The number of shootings involving active students has fallen every year since 2022, and just 122 active students were shot during the 2024-2025 school year, according to Chalkbeat. The outlet reported that the rate of gun-violence victimization for active students dropped 70% since the 2021-2022 school year. Still, researchers found that the most common window for these shootings was 3 to 5 p.m., with Monday afternoons seeing the highest concentration, based on data spanning the 2020-21 through 2023-24 school years.
Chalkbeat also found that more than half of student shootings cluster in five ZIP codes, with the heaviest concentration in North Philadelphia's 19121. Students at alternative schools were shot at a rate of 3.79 per 1,000 during the 2025-2026 school year — more than ten times the roughly 0.30 per 1,000 rate for traditional and non-cyber charter students — while the rate for cyber charter students climbed from 0.63 to 0.81 per 1,000 over the same period.
Citywide Violence Trends Downward Even as Shootings Persist
Broader shooting and homicide figures in Philadelphia have also trended downward this year. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that 23 people were shot citywide from July 1 through July 7, 2026 — nearly half the average for that week over the prior decade, though still slightly above most individual weeks this year. That same report noted 90 homicide victims recorded so far in 2026, compared with the more than 70 people shot in a single week back in 2021 at the height of the city's gun violence crisis, and 13 people shot in South Philadelphia during the prior year's Independence Day celebrations.
Police have also been closing more cases. The Trace reported that Philadelphia's homicide clearance rate nearly doubled from 45% in 2016 to 82% the previous year, while the clearance rate for nonfatal shootings climbed 15 percentage points over the same decade to more than 40%. The outlet noted that Philadelphia recorded 93 homicides through July 12, 2026 — down 23% from the same period in 2025 and nearly 70% from 2021 — and that cities including New York, Chicago, Houston, and Baltimore posted clearance rates between 65% and 79% last year, while Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles reported 85% and 101%, respectively.
For now, the man shot outside Universal Audenried remains in critical condition, and detectives have released no further details on a motive or suspect. Anyone with information is urged to call Philadelphia police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online.
