Part Of A Broader Pattern City Officials Are Confronting
The Lanier Crescent shooting comes as Portsmouth officials grapple with what WTKR describes as a recent surge in gun violence citywide. That same report covered a separate, deadly shooting on Towne Point Road that killed a 19-year-old man and injured a 5-month-old infant, an attack Police Chief Stephen Jenkins described as premeditated.
Jenkins has said Portsmouth saw a reduction in homicides last year, though he noted more data is needed to assess how well intervention programs are working. The city has pointed to its partnership with community violence intervention programs, including Portsmouth United, as part of an effort to place nonprofits and violence interrupters directly in affected neighborhoods.
It remains unclear whether the Lanier Crescent shooting is connected in any way to the Towne Point Road attack or other recent incidents, and no additional details on the victim's identity or condition have been released.
