A man was stabbed four times in the back on Knight Street in Providence Monday night, leaving him in critical but stable condition at the hospital, and police say a 31-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident. The attack unfolded around 7:15 p.m. amid a reported disturbance, as officers responded to the Knight Street area.
Officers responding to 299 Knight Street around 7:15 p.m. for a reported disturbance found the man suffering from the stab wounds to his back, according to WPRI. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, police said. WJAR similarly reported that the man was critically injured in the stabbing and taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where his condition was described the same way.
Suspect Taken Into Custody at Central Station
Police say a 31-year-old man was taken into custody at the Central Station parking lot without incident, according to the department's account relayed in that same WPRI report. No charges had been announced as of the initial report, and the station noted there was no word on any charges at that time.
The investigation remains ongoing, Providence Department of Public Safety chief public information officer Kristy DosReis confirmed to Patch. Authorities have not released details on what led up to the stabbing or the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victim.
Not the Only Recent Stabbing in the City
It is not the only stabbing Providence police have investigated recently. In a separate incident reported by WPRI, a man was stabbed in the back, neck and shoulder after first responders were called to Somerset Street near Broad Street on a Thursday night, with that victim also rushed to Rhode Island Hospital and reported stable by police. The Providence Police Department's own crime-data page notes that weekly figures are compiled Monday mornings based on information available at the time and can be revised as investigations develop, meaning a full picture of any broader pattern isn't yet established.
For now, the Knight Street case remains under investigation, with no charges confirmed and key details about what sparked the confrontation still unreleased.
