A 21-year-old man shot himself in the right hand overnight while working on a pistol inside a home on Sycamore Street in Marysville, according to police. He was rushed first to a local hospital and then transferred to a Columbus-area trauma center for further treatment.
Marysville Police Division officers responded at 1:20 a.m. after a 911 call reporting an accidental firearm discharge, according to ABC 6. The call came from the 300 block of Sycamore Street, where the caller told police that her 21-year-old son had shot himself in the hand. Officers determined that the man had accidentally shot himself in the right hand while handling the pistol.
The man was initially taken to Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Ohio State University Hospital for further treatment, per the same report. No other injuries were reported from the incident. As reported by Fox 28, Marysville police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
What We Still Don't Know
Police have not released a statement detailing how the gun discharged while the man was working on it, and there's no public information yet on the firearm's ownership or whether it was properly secured beforehand. It's also unclear whether the man has been released from the hospital or what his current condition is, since those details have not been made public.
Accidental Shootings Aren't Rare in Ohio
Firearm-related injuries remain a persistent public health issue nationally, with the CDC tracking firearm injuries and deaths as an ongoing area of study. In Ohio specifically, the state's Violence and Injury Prevention Program, run by the Ohio Department of Health, examines injury burden across multiple categories statewide. Separately, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions note that Ohio's overall gun suicide rate rose 7% from 2023 to 2024, according to Johns Hopkins data — though that figure speaks to a broader statewide trend rather than this specific case.
A Similar Scare in Westerville
Accidental discharges have made headlines elsewhere in central Ohio in the past. A Westerville police officer was struck in the hand and thigh in December when another officer's firearm accidentally discharged during a training exercise, according to 10TV. That officer, identified as Curtis Myers, was treated at Mount Carmel East and later released, with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The officer who fired the weapon was placed on leave under standard department policy, and both the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and the Westerville Division of Police opened reviews of that incident.
No arrests or charges have been reported in connection with the Marysville shooting, and police have not indicated whether any citations are expected as the investigation continues.
