A man was left in critical condition Monday evening after a Metrobus struck him while he was crossing the street near New Hampshire Avenue and Georgia Avenue NW in Petworth. Fourth District officers responded to the scene around 7:16 p.m. and found the man with serious injuries; he was conscious and breathing when EMS took him to the hospital.
According to WJLA, the bus was operating on the D74 route when it struck the man as he crossed near the intersection. The Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Unit is now investigating the incident, which police released details about. Separately, FOX 5 DC reported that the collision was logged around 7 p.m. near the same New Hampshire Avenue and Georgia Avenue intersection, and that the man was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being found at the scene with serious injuries.
What Police Are Asking Of Witnesses
Investigators have asked anyone with information about the crash to call D.C. police at 202-727-9099 or text tips to 50411. The WMATA bus-tracking system lists the D74 route as running east toward Rhode Island Avenue, though it is not established whether that direction or any detour applied to the specific bus involved in Monday's crash.
No further details have been released about the man's identity, his current medical condition beyond the initial hospitalization, or whether the bus driver has been identified. It also remains unclear who had the right of way at the time of the collision, and police have not said whether any citations or charges have resulted from the investigation.
A Rough Year For Pedestrians In The Region
Monday's crash adds to what has been a difficult year for pedestrian safety across the Washington area. Metropolitan Police had documented 29 deadly collisions involving motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in the District in 2026, surpassing the 25 traffic fatalities recorded on D.C. roads in all of 2025, according to the Washington Times. At the same point the previous year, the District had recorded just 13 traffic deaths.
The trend extends beyond the District's borders. The Washington Times reported that Fairfax County had documented 13 pedestrian fatalities in 2026, one shy of the 14 killed there throughout 2025, while Montgomery County's pedestrian death toll reached 10, down from 14 the year before. Arlington County, which had no pedestrian deaths in 2025, has reported two so far this year, per the same report.
That same account also detailed a separate, fatal Metrobus crash in Fairfax County, where a driver struck and killed a 59-year-old man in Bailey's Crossroads around 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday night. The victim, identified as Adam Ali, was taken to a hospital but died in the operating room, police said at the time.
Petworth itself is no stranger to major crash investigations. MPD's Major Crash Investigations Unit looked into a separate fatal crash in the neighborhood in February 2026, according to a department release. Monday's incident remains under active investigation, and police have not released any update on the man's condition since he was taken to the hospital.
