The empty Joann Fabrics storefront near North Star Mall is about to get a new tenant, and it's one that's been quietly working its way across Texas. Parisina, a Mexican hobby and craft chain with nearly a century of history, has confirmed plans to open its first San Antonio location inside the vacant big-box space at 25 NE Loop 410, Suite 114.

The move makes San Antonio the company's third Texas location, following stores that opened inside a former Forever 21 in McAllen in December 2025 and inside another shuttered Joann Fabrics in Spring in May 2026, according to Houston Historic Retail. As MySA first reported, Parisina has not yet revealed an opening date for the San Antonio store. The chain's stores typically carry fabrics, textiles, sewing and craft supplies, and home goods, and the company says its locations offer one of the largest selections of fabrics, crafts, and home items in the Americas.

A Nearly Century-Old Chain Crosses the Border

Parisina traces its roots to 1933, when founder Juan José Sierra opened a 220-square-meter store in the Historic Center of Mexico City, according to background compiled from Wikipedia and corporate filings. The company now operates under parent Grupo Parisina, S.A. de C.V., which runs more than 600 stores and employs over 10,000 workers across Mexico, per Mexico News Daily. Fabric sells for $5.99 or less per yard with some restrictions, the same report notes, and Parisina is often compared to Joann's and Hobby Lobby in scale and selection.

Parisina has begun hiring for the San Antonio store, with openings for store managers, keyholders, and sales floor associates. On social media, the company has invited followers to track its progress toward opening, posting that shoppers should “get ready to discover a world of #fabrics, #artsandcrafts, #homedecor, and so much more,” adding, “we can't wait to meet our new creative community!”

Filling a Void Joann Left Behind

The San Antonio location sits in a space with a complicated recent history. Joann Fabrics closed its San Antonio store in May 2025 after the national chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, part of a collapse that began with an initial filing in March 2024 and culminated in a second bankruptcy in January 2025 that shut down all roughly 800 of the company's locations nationwide by May of that year, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The liquidation wiped out all three of the chain's San Antonio-area stores, including locations on SE Military Drive, Bandera Road, and Loop 410, per MySA's earlier reporting on the closures.

Hoodline previously covered the scope of that collapse, including how it rippled through stores well beyond Texas.

A Shopping Center in Transition

The 25 NE Loop 410 address sits within Pavilions North Shopping Center, directly across from North Star Mall, according to a listing on LoopNet. The center is seeing broader turnover elsewhere too: a $205,000 renovation is converting a former 52,132-square-foot Conn's HomePlus space into an NRG Adventure Park family entertainment center, with state licensing filings pointing to an early 2026 completion window, as reported by Community Impact.

For now, San Antonio shoppers eager to see Parisina's colorful aisles will have to keep watching its social channels. No grand opening date has been announced, but between the hiring push and the store's social media teasers, the signs point to a debut arriving sooner rather than later.
